If you had to lose one of your major senses, which one would you most willingly give up? Why? Effects? And least willingly give up? Why? Effects?
Welcome to Mr. Ochsner’s Blog site!
If you had to lose one of your major senses, which one would you most willingly give up? Why? Effects? And least willingly give up? Why? Effects?

If I had to willingly give up one of my major senses, I’d give up smell. I chose this, because you can manage without smelling, and it isn’t that important. The only thing I couldn’t do without the ability to smell is smell foods and aromas. I would be least willing to give up my ability to see. Seeing is everything. A picture is a thousand words. Being able to see is a wonderful thing, and many people take it for granted. If you couldn’t see, it would be hard to picture things in your mind and know what people are doing/look like. Our major senses are a big part of our lives, and I would never want to lose any of them!
October 28, 2008 at 5:45 pm
It is very important that we have all of our senses. If I had to give up one of them though, I would give up being able to smell. I would give this one up because out of all our senses this one is probably more of a gift than a need. Being able to see, hear, taste, and touch are all important to our daily lives and so is smelling, but if you think about it, we could live without smelling things. The sense I would be least willing to give up is probably being able to see. I would not want to give this up because we use this all the time. We are always looking at something and it would be very sad if you could never see anything ever again. This could also be very dangerous because you could not see if a danger was coming towards you. As you can see all of our senses are important, and some are more important than others.
October 29, 2008 at 1:33 pm
If I had to lose one of my major senses I would lose smell. This sense is the least important to me. I would not know what certain things smelt like anymore. I would not give up my sense of sight. I need to be able to see the beauty of things and it would be very hard to get around. I would have to use something to see for me. I would never give up this sense.
October 29, 2008 at 3:10 pm
If I had to pick a sense to give up, I would probably give up taste. You don’t really need taste for anything. It is more like a luxury than necessity. I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the tastes of the world, but I would not need it. I would never want to give up sight, however. I need sight to get around, and to see the beauty in the world. Without my sight, it would be very difficult to live on my own, if not impossible. I could never enjoy the beauty of seeing nature and everything else in life. Also it would very hard to move around and do basic tasks.
October 30, 2008 at 2:07 pm
If I had to give up a sense I would chose hearing. This is because hearing things is that important because of sign language so then I know what people are saying. One sense I would never give up is sight. This is because sight is very important to see beautiful things and it would be hard to get around.
October 30, 2008 at 2:51 pm
If I had to give up one of my senses it would probably be smelling. Smelling is important but not the most important out of all the senses. I would rather need vision or hearing than smell. This is why I would rather loose smelling than any other sense that have.
November 1, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Responding to Julian D.: I disagree with your thoughts. The least important sense to me would be smell. You don’t really need it to function. You chose that taste would be the sense you’d give up. For me, taste is a wonderful thing. I love to bake, and wouldn’t be able to taste my food or the food all over the world. Although we have different thoughts about which sense we’d give up, we both have the same opinion about the sense we wouldn’t want to give up (seeing).
November 3, 2008 at 2:40 pm
If I had to lose one of my senses, I owould most willingly lose smell. All of the other senses seem important to me compared to smell. The effects would be that i could not smell the good or bad smells and I really wouldn’t care. I would not like to lose the sense of seeing. I would not be able to see anything and I would not like that at all. It would be difficult to go on life without being able to see anything at all. It would be very frustrating.
November 3, 2008 at 2:43 pm
If I had to give up one of my five senses, I would give up my ability to smell. I would do this because scent isn’t really as important as tthe other senses. You don’t need it to communicate with other people. Plus, you don’t always want to smell certain things. The one I would not want to give up the most is sight. I love to see new things and that’s important to me. Also, I ouldn’t do all of the things I love to do, like drawing, without sight. That is why I would not give up sight.
November 3, 2008 at 3:36 pm
The sense that I would most willingly give up is smell. I would give up smell because sometimes it’s better if you can’t smell anything. I would most not willingly give up sight. I would not give up sight because without sight it’s kind of hard to do a lot of things. That is what I would most willingly and not willingly give up for my senses.
November 3, 2008 at 5:37 pm
If I had to give up one of my senses it would be smell. This is because smelling is not very important in every day life. Most people probably wouldn’t even notice if you weren’t able to smell. The sense I wouldn’t give up is vision. If you can’t see, this will affect your whole life. You wouldn’t be able to do numerous activities such as softball and many other sports. You also wouldn’t be able to see where you are going, as a result you could run into a tree or something if you don’t have a guide dog. These are some reasons why I would rather lose my sense of smell than my sight.
November 3, 2008 at 5:39 pm
If I had to give up a six sense, it would probably be smelling. Smelling is important, but sometimes its good if you cant smell. You don’t have to smell those nasty smells, which is a very good thing. That is why I would give up smell.
November 3, 2008 at 5:45 pm
I agree with Jacqueline M. you can manage without smelling, and it isn’t that important. The only thing I couldn’t do without the ability to smell is smell foods and aromas. I would be least willing to give up my ability to see. Seeing is everything. A picture is a thousand words. If you had one big wiff of the greatest smell in the world, and then loose it, you would be fine.
November 3, 2008 at 5:49 pm
If I had to lose a sense it would be smell. I could be okay without smell. It would affect my taste, but that could be an advantage by not being able to smell bad food. It would also be a disadvantage because I would never be able to smell good things anymore. If had one sense to least lose it would be sight. I could never manage without sight. Most of my talents would stop immediately because I depend on sight. For example, I couldn’t play the piano nearly as well as I do now. That skill would be a very unfortunate loss.
November 3, 2008 at 6:00 pm
If I had to give up one of my senses I would give up smell. I would give up smell because it isn’t a big part like being able to see or hear. Some effects would be that I wouldn’t be able to smell flowers or perfume. I wouldn’t be able to smell fresh cookies that just came out of the oven. The sense I would least willingly give up would be hearing. I wouldn’t give up hearing because it would be hard not being able to hear someone say that they love you or that they really care about you. I couldn’t give up hearing because I couldn’t hear a joke or hear my brothers and parents voices. Some effects would be that I couldn’t listen to music. I wouldn’t be able to hear the sounds of nature or listen to what the priest says at mass.
November 3, 2008 at 7:51 pm
If I had to give up one of my senses, I would give up my sense of smell. My smelling isn’t really that great anyway. I would give it up because I wouldn’t have to smell all the disgusting smells in the world. It would be nice. However, I also wouldn’t be able to smell the good smells, but it would be worth it.
November 3, 2008 at 8:28 pm
If I had to lose one of my major senses, I would probably pick smelling. I would pick this because you need the sense to see what you are smelling and you need to see if you can hear it, and etc. Without the sense of smelling, yeah so you wont be able to smell the wonderful smells anymore, but seriously I would rather loose that sense then lose my sight. So the one sense that isn’t so important but at the same time it is, but if I had to lose one that would be my choice. I would least willing give up my sense of seeing. We need our eyes, for example look at the people out there that are blind they can’t see what they are doing, so they need a dog to guard them and take them places. You need to be able to see what you are doing at all times.
November 3, 2008 at 8:32 pm
I am responding to Jacqueline M. I agree with you totally. I mean I would love to smell all the wonderful smells in the world, but if I were to lose my sight I wouldn’t be able to know what I was smelling or what I was doing. So as I said in my paragraph I would definitely not want to lose my sight. If you think about it, say I was blind and I couldn’t see, I wouldn’t be able to read this question that I was just asked for this blogging. I wouldn’t know where the buttons on the keyboard are either. So yes I agree with you fully.
November 3, 2008 at 10:38 pm
If I had to give up one sense it would be smell. There are many great comforts out of smell but if it was neccisary this sense would be the least of my concerns. There would be many downfalls but at least from taste you could figure out the smell pretty easily. That least willing sense i would give up would be Sight. Without being able to see would be devistaing. There are so many beautiful things in the earth to see and whitness the amazing creations of God. That is definently why I would want to keep sight but lose smell.
November 4, 2008 at 2:32 pm
If I had to give up one of my senses I would give up smell. I would give up smell because it is not very important. Without smell, life would be same and nothing would really change. I would least willingly give up my sense of sight. I would not give up sight because then I wouldn’t be able to see. Those are the senses that I would and would not give up.
November 4, 2008 at 2:33 pm
I agree with Sydney C. We had the same exact persepetive on this topic. I would miss smell but I would hate it even more if I had to lose my sight. For hearing there are aids and sign language, taste there is smell, and if there is no feeling there is rehabilitation. But if your are blind you are blind there is really not much to do. That is why Sydney C. and myself agree.
November 4, 2008 at 4:20 pm
If I had to give up one of my senses it would be smell and I diffidently wouldn’t give up my sight. In my opinion the sense you use least is smell. People don’t use their smell as much as they use their sight. I would be completely lost with out my sight; we use sight every single waking moment of our lives while our sense of smell is used only once in a while. Sight is the most important sense humans have.
November 4, 2008 at 5:29 pm
If I had to lose one of my major senses, the one that I would be most willing to give up would me my sense of taste. Taste is only used when you’re eating something, but all of the other senses you use every single day. If I only lost my sense of taste, I could still see the world, hear music, feel something I held, and smell a flower. The only thing that I am missing out on with taste would be the flavor of food. However, the thing that I would want to part with the least would be my sight. I would not be able to see anything, I would be blind. That is extremely frightening to me, to have to rely on someone or something else so totally just to walk around. I would miss what things look like, and I may even forget what colors are, or what my friends look like when they smile, or what my sisters look like when they are laughing. To me, that is the worst loss of all, to forget what the world looks like. So, it would be an easier sacrifice to give up the sense of taste, and hardest of all to stop seeing.
November 4, 2008 at 5:34 pm
I am responding to Shannon E. when she says that she would most willingly give up her sense of hearing. I disagree with her. Personally, I think that would be a very bad idea because of all of the things that you would miss. For example, you could not hear someone calling your name, you could not hear your parents saying that they love you. You wouldn’t even hear your friends laugh, and you could never again hear the sounds of your siblings playing. I think that this sacrifice would be too much to bear. However, I do agree with Shannon that sight is the last thing I would ever want to give up.
November 4, 2008 at 6:22 pm
If I had to give up one of my major senses i would give up the ability to sing. I would still get to experience the wonderful world we live it. However I would have to respond differently. Instead of saying how something makes me feel, I would have to express my feelings through sign language. I would never give up my ability to see. A picture is worth 1,000 words. I have seen some pretty amazing things and I would hate to have missed them. I believe that sight is your most important sense.
November 4, 2008 at 7:38 pm
If I had to willingly give up one of my senses, I think I would give up smell. Hearing, seeing, touch, and talking are way too important to me and something everyone needs.
But, I do know that we all need to be able to smell also. If I couldn’t smell, it would be too bad. I couldn’t smell cookies that had just came out of the oven. I couldn’t smell the ocean, that’s my favorite smell at of anything. The effects it would have on me if I lost my smell would be big. I wouldn’t be able to smell my favorite smell. And that would be hard for me to get through without smelling the ocean breeze and the oceans waters and all the oceans smell it has to offer me. The hardest thing that I would have to give up is probably my sight. I’m not sure what any human would do without sight. It’s pretty important to all people and what they do in their everyday lives with sight. If I didn’t have my sight, I wouldn’t be able to see my favorite sight in the world, the ocean. And I wouldn’t be able to see my loving family and friends. All the senses would be hard for anyone to lose.
November 4, 2008 at 8:29 pm
I think that it would be extremely hard to give up any of my senses. But if I had to give up one of my senses, I would give up my hearing. I would most willingly be able to give up hearing because with hearing, I could get some sort of implant so that I could hear. With the effects though of not having hearing, I wouldn’t be able to hear what’s going on around me or I wouldn’t be able to hear if someone is coming. Also, I wouldn’t have music in my life which is a pretty big part of me. The sense that I would not give up would be my sight. I have to see everyone and everything around me and I have to see what is going on. Also, I am a visual learner so I always need words or pictures right in front of me to understand them. But if I did lose it, I think my life would be totally different. I don’t think I would be who I am today because I love colors, I love to draw and I love designing things from rooms to clothes and I need all of that in my life.
November 4, 2008 at 8:59 pm
If I had to lose one of my major senses, I would lose smell. I would do this because smell isn’t that important in the world today. It is not needed. You don’t need it to survive in the world. The sense I would least willingly give up is sight. Sight is the most important in today’s society. Most jobs require sight. If I did not have sight I would not know what to do.
November 4, 2008 at 9:30 pm
I agree with Jordan. I agree with her because smell is not needed in this world. I like how she added that she would not have to smell the disgusting odors. That is a very good statement because smelling bad odors can be quite irritating. I also agree with her about the fact of good odors. Sure, pleasant odors are quite satisfying, but I would rather not smell bad odors then smell good ones.
November 4, 2008 at 9:36 pm
If I had to give up any one of the five senses it would be touch. You can definitely live without having the sense of touch or feel. It would be strange to not feel anything again, but I think it would be the easiest sense to live without. The hardest, I think, would be sight. I need to see to live. If I couldn’t see I wouldn’t be able to recognize objects or people. I would be completely disoriented. I have a great respect for blind people because I know their life must be so hard. It would be hard to give up any of your senses, but the easiest would be touch and the hardest would be smell.
November 5, 2008 at 2:23 pm
If I had to lose one of my senses it would be the sense of smell. I would pick this because I need this one the least because i would still be able to see and taste but not being able to smell wouldn’t hurt me as bad. I would least willingly give my sense of sight. This is because I wouldn’t be able to see again. It would be bad to not see again because then you wouldn’t be able to see work you do in school. Those are the senses I would and wouldn’t give up.
November 5, 2008 at 2:29 pm
I’m responding to Kate K. I agree with her because I mean it would be nice to smell and everything but it would just be much better to give up smell than sight. That’s another thing I mean without sight it would be very hard in evryday life. Without sight it would be very hard to do many things, including reading a book or even walking across the room. That is why I agree with Kate K.
November 5, 2008 at 2:36 pm
If I had to give up one of my senss I would give up my sense of hearing. I feel that this is an unused sense. I would still miss the sense but not that much. I would not want to give up the sense of taste. If you gave this up you wouldnt enjoy food. This would not be fun.
November 5, 2008 at 2:37 pm
If I were to give up any sense it would be taste. I would give it up because it is the only sense that if you lose it, you wont lose any other sense. The bad thing about it is that I couldn’t taste any of the delicious foods and drinks. The one sense I would not want to lose is my vision. If I lost any sense except vision you could still play some sports. But if I lost my vision then I couldn’t play any sport. So if I were to sacrifice any sense, it would be taste.
November 5, 2008 at 2:39 pm
If I were going to lose one of my five senses I would lose my sense of smell because I don’t like to smell things very much. Sometimes they are very stinky. Some effects of this might be that I lose some of my taste, but that is ok. One sense I would not like to lose is my sense of sight. If I lose this sense then I would have to get a dog to see for me and I wouldn’t be able to drive but I could get really snazzy glasses. That is my opinion about my senses.
November 5, 2008 at 2:43 pm
If i had to losre one sense it wold be taste. It would be taste because you would never have the taste of bad food and you could eat the spiciest thing in the world and you wouldnt be able to notice it. I would not lose sight or hearing beccause they are too important to me. I would definatley loise either taste or touch.
November 5, 2008 at 3:34 pm
if i had to willingly give up one of my senses, it would have to be smell. It is not that important to me. I think it would be better not to have a sense of smell becuase there are a lot of bad smelling things in my life, like my dog. It would open up a variaty of places for me, like the public bathrooms. Then I could finnaly go in there and not throw up. I hate public bathrooms. I would also be able to get surprised by dinner instead of knowing that its meatloaf. It would probably inhance my life more than it degrades it.
November 5, 2008 at 4:10 pm
I had to lose a sense, it would probably be smell. Smelling things is nice, but sometimes certain smells can make you nauseous or hungry. Other smells are just too pungent and make my eyes water. The one I would not be willing to give up is hearing. I would be so bored if I couldn’t listen to music while I read or hear my friends talk. Sure, I could learn sign language, but I never really understood that. People talking to me would have to go really slowly and I’d probably make them repeat it a few times. It would just be too tedious.
November 5, 2008 at 4:41 pm
I agree with Jacqueline M. when she said, “Seeing is everything. A picture is a thousand words.” Seeing is the most important sense because we use it every second of the day. I cannot imagine what it would be like to lose my sight. Losing my sight would like be losing a part of me. Can you imagine what it would be like not to be able to see the things right in front of your face, the world around you?
November 5, 2008 at 4:59 pm
If I were to give up one of my major senses this is which one i would give up.I would give up smell and because it is a relativley useless sense. Life would be easy living without smell, however you wouldn’t be able to smell things like foods and various other things but it wouldn’t be hard to live without. The sense i would most unwillingly give up would be my sight. life without sight would be very difficult because you cant do very much without being able to see. That is which sense i would most unwillingly give up.
November 5, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Response: I strongly agree with Jullian D. and this is why. Taste is more of a luxury than it is a sense but it is, as Jullian said, nice to be able to taste different tastes “of the world”. Sight is also one of the most valuable senses because we need sight for almost everything in our lives. That is why i agree with Jullian D.
November 5, 2008 at 5:12 pm
If I had to loose one of my major senses, I would probably give up the sense of smell. Although it could be a better use to a person than taste would be, I would choose smell. We could live without smelling, and it will probably not make life harder for us if we don’t have it. Seeing, feeling, and hearing are very important senses that people use everyday, all the time, so those are more important to loose. The one major sense that I would least willingly give up would be seeing. If I lost the sense to see, my life would be very hard. I wouldn’t get to see all the good and bad things in life. I wouldn’t really be able to imagine things, or do much of anything. I would willingly give up the sense smell, but definitely not seeing.
November 5, 2008 at 5:27 pm
If I had to willingly give up one of my major senses, I would give up the sense of smell. Unlike all the others senses, this one you are able to live without. Even though everyone loves to smell things and can connect smells to an object, we don’t need it the most as the others. The one I would least willingly give up would be sight. Without your sight you wouldn’t be able to do many of the things you love. Being blind would make playing sports near impossible, you don’t always know where you are, and it is absolutely amazing all the things that are in the world. Imagine never seeing the Grand Canyon or the face of what your parents or best friend looks like. Seeing is everything.
November 5, 2008 at 5:45 pm
If I were to give up any sense I would give up my ability to smell. I would probably give up smelling because smelling isn’t always good. It is a pain to have if you’re in a bad smelling area. The sense I would least willingly give up would be my sight. Thing like walking are much more difficult if you can’t see. Anyone’s life would drastically change if you can’t see. Those are the senses that i would and would not willingly give up.
November 5, 2008 at 5:58 pm
I would be most willingly to give up my sense of smell. People don’t really need the ability to smell and we could live without it. Of course I wouldn’t smell the fantastic smells in the world but at least I would have four other senses to enjoy life. I would not want to give up my sense of hearing. Hearing is a very important sense to me because if I could not hear then I could not talk to people or even watch movies. I could not learn at school or listen to music. I am lucky though I have all my five senses so I could see, feel, hear, smell, and taste all there is in this world.
November 5, 2008 at 6:15 pm
I would give up the sense of smell. This is the weakest of the 5 senses in my opinion. Seeing and Hearing in my opinion are the two biggest senses. Without the sense of seeing, you could not participate in any activities. Hearing is also very important because you want to know what people are saying and participate in conversations. That is why I would give up the sense of smell if I had to choose one.
November 5, 2008 at 7:42 pm
I would have to say I would probably give up my sense of hearing. I would because there are noises I can’t stand and I hate when people are so loud. I could just read peoples lips. I would least want to give up taste. I would not want to because I love food so darn much and I love trying new things.
November 5, 2008 at 7:56 pm
I’m responding to Kate K. I agree with her because it would be nice to smell, but it would just be much better to give up smell than sight. That’s another thing, without sight it would be very hard in everyday life. Without sight it would be very hard to do many things, including reading a book or even walking across the room. That is why I agree with Kate K.
November 5, 2008 at 10:28 pm
All of our senses our very important. If I had to lose one major sense I would lose the sense smell. Smell, to me, would be least life changing sense. The other senses would be too drastic to lose. We need the sense sight so we can get around, without it, we would probably need help doing everyday tasks. Hearing is very important because you need to hear what people are saying. The sense taste is not that important, but it is very luxurious to taste sweet things, without it I would really miss it. That is why I would choose smell if I had to chose to lose a sense.
November 6, 2008 at 7:12 am
If I were as to give up one of my sense, I would be most willing to give up my sense of smell. I would give up my sense of smell because then I would be able to smell really bad smells. The only down side to that would be not being able to know if I smell bad. Also I would not be able to smell really good smells such as barbeque, a bakery, very expensive cologne and that new car smell. The sense that I would be least willing to give up would be my sense of hearing. I would be least willing to give up would be my sense of hearing, because when people talk to me I cannot hear what they are saying. Also I would have to say what all the time, which would probably get on people’s nerves. That is why I would be least willing to give up would be my sense of hearing and most willing to give up my sense of smell.
November 6, 2008 at 7:58 am
I would most willing give up my sense of smell. You use it sometimes but it is not one that you will need your whole life. I would most not willing give up sight. You need to see to be able to walk and pick up thing. That is one sense you need your whole life.
November 6, 2008 at 2:10 pm
If I had to lose a sence I would give up my sence of smell. I could live without being able to smell for a while. But I don’t think I would enjoy not having your sence of sight. If I lost my sight I would be devistated. That is the sence I would give up.
November 6, 2008 at 2:12 pm
If i could choose one sense to give up it would be my sense of smell. I would do this because my sense of smell is not that important. Also there are some smells that are absolutley terrible. That is why I would get rid of my sense of smell. The one I would be least willing to give up is my sense of taste. I would not give this sense up because if I couldn’t taste anything I would practically die. Those are the sense I would and would not give up.
November 6, 2008 at 2:14 pm
If I had to lose a one of my sences I would loose smell. I would lose this because it is the least useful. I wouldn’t be able to smell things anymore. The sence I wouldn’t want to lose would be sight. If I can’t see I wouldn’t know what was happening.
November 6, 2008 at 2:14 pm
I agree and disagree with Kate K. I agree with her because I would also give up smell becuase I don’t think it’s very important. I don’t think it’s important because you don’t really need your sense of smell in everyday life and you wouldn’t have to smell all of the bad things in the world. I disagree with her because I wouldn’t want to give up my hearing. I wouldn’t want to give up my hearing because I wouldn’t be able to have a conversation with someone and I wouldn’t be able to hear the beautiful sounds of nature. This is why I agree and disagree with Kate K.
November 6, 2008 at 2:17 pm
If I had to lose one of my sences I would probably choose to lose my sense of smell. I would want to lose this sense instead of any others because I wouldnt want to lose my touch because I wouldnt be able to feel anything, my friends, family, nothing. I would be least willing to lose my sense of touch. As I said before, I woulnt be able to feel everyone around me.
November 6, 2008 at 2:18 pm
I agree with Shannon E. Shannon, hearing is important but what I think is that I wouldn’t want to hear bad words or gossip that is being said about people. But I think I could live without seeing things, especially bodily stuff like blood and puke. I could never give up taste because I love tasting things.
November 6, 2008 at 2:19 pm
I agree with Anthony O. I agree with him because I would rather lose smell than anyother sence. I would want to see, hear, taste, and feel. If you couldn’t smell that would be bad too. It wouldn’t be as bad as losing any other sences.
November 6, 2008 at 2:22 pm
I Agree with Dillon C. I agree with him because I would also want to give up smelling if I had to give one of them up. I also agree with him because you use smell the least of all the other senses. That is why I agree with Dillon C.

I agree with Dillon C. I agree with him because I would also get rid of my sense of smell. I would do this becuase I would not like to smell the nasty smells in the world. That is why I agree with Dillon C.
November 6, 2008 at 2:23 pm
I agree with Matthew. I would also choose to lose my sense of smell if smell. I agree with him in the fact that is not very important. No one needs to have smell and actually in some cases it would be a good thing to not have smell. Their could be a bad smell and if you didnt have your sense of smell you wouldnt be able to smell it.
November 6, 2008 at 2:30 pm
I agree with Ellen and Sydney on this situation. I would hate to lose my smell, because there are so many wonderful smelling things in the world, but I would hate it even more to lose something else, such as sight or hearing. There are always things so such as hearing aids, for if you are slightly deaf, but not for fully being deaf. But if you are blind, you can’t really do anything because there is nothing to see and you can’t do anything fun or exciting, so I agree with Ellen on this. These are the reasons why I agree with Syd and Ellen though.

I disagree with Shannon E. To choose to lose hearing would very much complicate life. If someone doesn’t know sign language it would be very hard to understand them. For me if I lost my hearing, I would be annoyed with only being able to feel the vibration of my own voice. I do agree with Shannon E. when she says sight is very important. That is why I think hearing would be a sense not worth losing.
November 6, 2008 at 4:23 pm
I agree with Mackenzie E. that I would lose my sense of smell. I don’t use this sense as much. I also agree that I would not give up being able to see.
November 6, 2008 at 4:34 pm
I agree with Alexia O. Smelling is the least important sense to me too. Also seeing is a very important sense in our lives because without it we would not able to experience the beauty in our world. It would be hard just to get around every day and plus you couldn’t be able to see your family or your loved ones. Without the gift of sight, it would be a lonely dark world.
November 6, 2008 at 4:34 pm
I would be most willingly to give up my sense of smell. People don’t really need the ability to smell and we could live without it. Of course I wouldn’t smell the fantastic smells in the world but at least I would have four other senses to enjoy life. I would not want to give up my sense of hearing. Hearing is a very important sense to me because if I could not hear then I could not talk to people or even watch movies. I could not learn at school or listen to music. I am lucky though I have all my five senses so I could see, feel, hear, smell, and taste all there is in this world.
November 6, 2008 at 5:51 pm
Scout A., I agree with you. I actually didn’t think about giving up the sense of smell and I think that says that it isn’t very significant. I agree with you when you said that the sense of smell is not as important compared to the other senses. The one thing though that I would very much miss about smell is all the beautiful and unique smells out there. I would probably miss the sophisticated and beautiful smell of perfume, the warm smell of the holidays, the alluring and amazing smell of different foods, and the fresh, clean, fruity, classy, warm, etc. smells of homes. With not being able to give of sight, I didn’t even think of how frustrating it would be to not see. I wouldn’t even be able to imagine my life without sight.
November 6, 2008 at 5:58 pm
If I had to lose one of my major senses it would probably be smell. I would pick smell because all the other senses we use a lot in our daily lives. Smelling is something that we don’t really need as much as the other senses. It would be a little odd not to smell anything but when you think about it, why do we really need smell as much as the other senses? The least willing to give up would probably be sight or touch (matters the person really), I would pick sight because I don’t think I could live with not seeing anything, it would be pure torture toward me if I go blind.
November 6, 2008 at 6:15 pm
If I could loose one major sense it would be taste. I would give this up so I could eat whatever i wanted even if it tasted bad. this would be good because I wouldn’t be picky about what i eat. The sense I would be least willing to give up is seeing. I would not want to give this up because i would never be able to see anything. I would always probaly crash into things if i would not be able to see.
November 6, 2008 at 6:20 pm
I agree with Ellen S. I also would not want to loose my ability to see because you could not see what people look like, what your touching, or what you are even looking at. if you were blind then you would probaly never know where you are.
November 6, 2008 at 6:22 pm
I am responding to Julian D. I agree and disagree with you really, I think taste is something we don’t really need to live, but smell is something we really don’t need as much as taste. I agree with you saying it is a luxury and that you don’t really need it.
November 6, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Dillon C, I agreee with you. Smelling is definitely the least of the five senses. Hearing and seeing are very important. You would also not smeel bad smells like garbage and other things. That is why I agree with Dillon C.
November 6, 2008 at 7:53 pm
I disagree with Jacqueline M. I love being able to smell. I don’t know how I could go on without being able to smell the ocean, or rain. I love being able to smell. It helps people experience things better. We smell different things everyday without even knowing it. My sent is a very important sense.
November 6, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Madison H., I disagree with you when you say that hearing would be the hardest sense to lose. I think sight would be the hardest because you wouldn’t be able to get around by yourself unless you have had training. However, I didn’t think about all of the things you would miss if you didn’t have the sense of hearing. We are lucky that we have five senses and should have great respect for people who don’t.
November 6, 2008 at 8:42 pm
I like all of my senses because they all play a big role in my life. But if I were to give one up it would probably be my sense to smell. I would pick smell because it is my least important sense because most of our othe ones may protect us from harm. The one that will be the hardest for my to give up would be the sense to feel. I would not want to give this sense up because i love feeling things because i like to touch. Without this sense i would be very mad because you feel throughout your day. Also because this sense will save you from danger from knowing if you are touching something hot or cold.
November 6, 2008 at 9:39 pm
If I had to lose a major sense it would be smell. I would give this up because I would rather taste then smell food. I would not want to give up sight because it would be a hard life not knowing where you are going and what you are doing. So if I had to give up a sense it would be smell.
November 7, 2008 at 3:49 pm
All of our senses are very important. If I had to choose to give up one, I would give up my speech. I would give it up because I know sign language, and I could communicate that way. The one that I would be most keen on keeping would be my eye-sight because I love to read, and I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t read.
November 7, 2008 at 4:04 pm
I agree with Alexia O. Your eye-sight is very important. It helps you do many things from reading to seeing the things around you. In the long run, smelling the things around you isn’t as important. I would rather see the world around me than smell everything any day.
November 7, 2008 at 4:36 pm
If i had to give up any sense i would give up smell. We need it to smell good things but there are also bad things to smell. I wouldn’t give up sight that would be to hard to give up. I need touch so it would be hard not to be able to feel anything. Speaking is one of the things i like to do best so that is the hardest one out of all!
November 8, 2008 at 10:57 am
I agree with Jordan. Smelling isn’t a very important sense. Somethimes you do have to smell discusting smells, but I still wouldn’t really want to give up smell if I didn’t have to.
November 8, 2008 at 2:30 pm
It is a hard choice to decide on which one of my senses that i would give up. But if i had to choose, I would choose the sense of smell. I would give up my sense of smell because it is not as major as losing something, such as your sight. The only difference in life would probably be that you wouldn’t be able to smell what is around you, or taste your food. I would be least willing to give up my sight. It would weird not to be able to see what is around you, such as people. You would not be able to see anything and you wouldn’t know what it looks like around you.
November 8, 2008 at 2:41 pm
I disagree with Shannon when she says that she would give up her sense of hearing. Hearing helps you a lot in life. If i were to lose my hearing right now i would be worried because i wouldn’t here what was going on around me. You could only really have a conversation in sign language when deaf. This is why I disagree with Shannon.
November 8, 2008 at 4:14 pm
If I had to give up one of my major senses I would give up smell. I think it is the least important of my major senses. There wouldn’t be much change without smell, you could still see and hear. Still, I would miss the smell of food cooking and the smell of desert but I would rather give that up than any other sense. A small bonus of giving up smell is that you wouldn’t have to smell the bad things like trash. I would definitely pick any other one my major senses then smell.
November 8, 2008 at 4:47 pm
I agree with Matthew G. Smell is not an important sense. If you lost your sense of smell, nothing would change. In my opinion, smelling things isn’t always a good thing. I fully agree with Matthew G.
November 8, 2008 at 8:08 pm
I am responding to Juliana C. I fully agree with your comment. I also would of lost my smell. It is not the most important thing you need. I would much rather have sight, hearing, and touch than smell. And i could never give up sight as well. This is why I agree with Juliana C.
November 8, 2008 at 11:12 pm
I would not want to lose any of my major senses. They are all so wonderful. If I had to choose a sense to lose, I would choose smelling. I would want to lose smelling because not everything smells delightful. Some things smell despicable and I would never want to smell them again. Although some things do smell delightful, I think that I could go without smelling them. I would not want to loose taste. Taste is pretty awesome because there are a lot of delicious foods and a variety of tastes that are pleasant. Losing that, I wouldn’t do so well, because I love food and the delicious tastes that it supplies me with. That is why I would give up the sense of smell and I wouldn’t want to lose the sense of taste.
November 9, 2008 at 12:07 pm
I am responding to Mackenzie E. She said she would be able to give up smell, and I disagree because smell is very important in life. Although I do agree that you can not give up sight because you truly do need to see to be able to do pretty much everything in life. So I agree and disagree with with Mackenzie E.
November 9, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Dillon C, I agree with you that smelling isn’t too important. I’ve never really had too many moments in my life where smelling was a necessity. Plus, there are many bad scents that you wouldn’t even notice if you couldn’t smell them. You make a very good point.
November 9, 2008 at 3:38 pm
I agree with Matt G. Smell isn’t one of the most important senses. However, what would happen if you were in a situation where you needed to smell something? For instance, if your house was on fire and you were asleep, how would you realize it was on fire without seeing or feeling the heat? In most situations, though, scents are a luxury. I agree with not wanting to lose my sight. I’d be sad if I couldn’t see my friend or family again. It would also be hard not being able to read. I guess I’d have to learn how to use Braille.
