The code used by Ben Franklin was possible because it used a book the almost every on the colonies was able to access. If you were to write a similar code today, which book would you choose (remember that it should be a book almost everyone has access to or could access). In your comment please list the book you would use and why you choose that book. Would you use a certain book if you were only trying to include a certain group of people?

  1. Anthony O. Says:

The book that I would choose would be the bible because mostly everyone in the world knows the word of the lord. Yes I would choose the Catholic bible so only the Catholic people would be able to understand what I would be saying. This is the book that would choose if was to use a code just like Ben Franklin did.

  2. Jack P Says:

the book I would use would definately be a bible. I would pick a bible because there are many codes you could use in it. I would not use a certain book if I was trying to include a certain group of peopl. these are only a few reasons why I would use a bible to make a code.

  3. Sarah F Says:

If I were writing a code, the book that I would use for a key would be either a bible or a dictionary. I would use either of those two books because most everyone has a bible in their house, and most everyone owns a dictionary. Therefore, my code would be easy to decipher if you knew the key, but hard to figure out if you did not know how you were supposed to solve it. However, if I was only trying to include a certain group of people, like Jewish people, my code would be the Torah, if I were only trying to include Americans, perhaps it would be the Declaration of Independence, (which anyone can access). So, depending on who the code was sent to, the key to it would be a different thing.

  4. Shannon e Says:

If I were to make a code today I would use a book lots of people have. I would use Marian- Webster Pocket Dictionary. The reason I chose this book because many people have it already and you can get them at stores. I would use a certain book for a certain group, so I know all the people have the same book.

  5. Madison H. Says:

If I were to write a similar code today I would use the Bible. I would use the bible because almost everyone is able to get it or has access to it even if they’re not Catholic or Christian. I would also choose the Bible because most people in the world are Christian. Yes, I would use a certain book if I was only trying to include a certain group of people. That is what book I would use if I were to write a code, and if I were only trying to include a certain group of people.

  6. Nick M Says:

If I had to pick one book that most people have i would pick the dictionary. Most people in society have easy access to this book. Another reason would be that a lot of people use the dictionary. Finally I think it would make it easier for the person receiving the letter to finish deciphering the code sent to them.

  7. nate h Says:

If I made a code system using a common household book, I would use a dictionary. I would use a dictionary because you can find a dictionary in almost every American home. I would also use a dictionary because it has every word in the English language. If I were using a book to determine a code that I want only a certain group of people like a religious group or ethnicity group, I would choose the Bible. Most Catholics have bibles in their homes. Those are some reasons why I would use a dictionary or a Bible for a secret code.

  8. Darian D Says:

If I were to write a code, I would use the Bible. The Bible is in most households and it has different mysteries and codes within it. Also, while looking for the codes, you get tempted to read what else is there which brings you closer to God and deeper in faith. I don’t know if I would use a certain book for a certain group of people. I don’t know if I would use it because I don’t know what kind of message that would be that important to only share with only a certain group of people.

  9. Jack D Says:

I would probably use an encyclopedia, probably one that everyone has. It would be the world book with all words that start with an A. Other books of the set would not be needed for the code. Only people that could understand and read enlgish could figure out the code also. It would work out because many people have an encyclopedia set. That is why I would use an encyclopedia.

  10. Julie L Says:

If I could create a code like Ben Franklin’s code I would use the Harry Potter series. Anybody could use these books because you can get them from the library or at almost any bookstore. If I did create the code though, it would only be for my friends probably since they would know what the numbers stood for and what books to use. If someone really wanted to know what books to use it wouldn’t be that hard. It wouldn’t be that hard because a lot of people know that I love the Harry Potter books.

  11. Sarah F Says:

One of Benjamin Franklin’s inventions that has greatly impacted my life would be his experiments with electricity. In this era, everything we use needs electricity and Benjamin’s studies of long ago helped to move the world along the path of electric power. Franklin made an electrical battery, formed the theories of positive and negative electricity, and also experimented with the energy of lightening. We owe much of our modern comforts to the ingenuity and genius of Benjamin Franklin.

  12. meghan r Says:

If I was going to invent a code I would have to be able to pick a book that everyone I would want to include in my message could read. The book I would most likely choose would be the Bible. My message would most likely be to one of my friends, who all have access to a bible. It would be important to use a book that only the people I want to read it have access to. For example, if I wanted to send a secret message to only Christians I would use the Bible because Buddhists or Jews have no interest in the Bible. Codes are important, but their ciphers are even more important.

  13. Jacob H. Says:

If I were to have a code I would probably use the bible if many people were going to decode it. However it could be a problem because everyone has that book. If I were to have a organization within the class of 8B, for example, I would use one of our textbooks for the coding. I would use a book that only certain people have. There are many different books you could use to code a message.

  14. Natalie D Says:

I would use something nobody would think of if I had to write a similar code today. I would maybe use a dictionary because lots of people can access that and I would also use it if I were to only include a certain group of people. Not many people would think of a dictionary. Although there would be a problem with the kind of dictionary because there are many different kinds, the most popular would be Merriam-Webster and I would probably choose a pocket dictionary.

  15. scout a Says:

I definitely would use the local newspaper to send messages. I could only send the code locally and weekly or daily. If I wanted to send it over a long period of time I would use a Bible because many people own a Bible. A bible would also be good because you could be more specific about the code without people knowing. If I wanted send a code a long distance I would use a specific internet site. Those are just a few things I would use to send code.

  16. michael myers 8B Says:

If I were to chose a code to use in a book i would definately chose either a dictionary or a bible. There are many codes that could be used in both of these books and almost everyone has acess to them. If i were trying to include a certain group of people i would use these same books again.

  17. Kevin V Says:

If I had to pick a book to use a code for it would most certainly be the Bible. Most people have one and it’s very big. There are so many different codes you could use, the one similar to Benjamin Franklin’s or use something similar like using the words in a certain book or chapter from the New or Old Testament. The Bible would be a perfect book to use for a code.

  18. Dillon C. Says:

If I would have to choose a book, I would choose a bibl.I would use a bible, because it is a time of war, and some people would want to pray. They would want to pray, because they might die. You would have to make a code, because in some countries, they would be illegal to worship God. That is some reasons I would choose the bible.

  19. Dillon C. Says:

If I would have to choose a book, I would choose a bible.I would use a bible, because it is a time of war, and some people would want to pray. They would want to pray, because they might die. You would have to make a code, because in some countries, they would be illegal to worship God. That is some reasons I would choose the bible.

  20. Bridgette S. Says:

If I were going to include only a certain group of people, then I would make it one that we all have. If it was school related, I would make it Year of the Hangman. Since it is already a necessity to have, it will solve the problem of who has the book. If it were to be within a wider range of people, then I would create my own book and give it to the people involved.

  21. Jordan S. Says:

If I were writing a code based on a book, I would use the dictionary. Almost everyone in the U.S. has one and it has every single word in the English language in it. If I were trying to include only a few people, I would use a book that everyone in the group had. That way, people in the group could figure it out, but regular people couldn’t. Using books for codes is a great idea.

  22. Nick D 8B Says:

The book i would us is the bible if i was trying to communicate with other kids from my school. I would do this because I know that every student would have access to one. That is why I would use the bible to communicate to Pope John students.

  23. Kate K Says:

The book I would use to make a code would be a dictionary. I would pick a dictionary because there are so many words and page that you could use to make up all sorts of codes and secret messages. I would use a certain book if I were trying to include a certain group of people. This is because it would be very hard for people outside of the group to discover the code. This is why I would use a dictionary and why I would use a certain book for a specific group of people.

  24. Jillian L Says:

I think if I were to pick a book to use a code with I would choose the Standard American dictionary. Almost everyone one I know has one because they are so useful. If I were trying to include a certain group of people, I would use a Bible. Many people have Bibles, even if they aren’t Catholic Christians. Those are the two books I would use to code a message in.

  25. Danny G 8B Says:

Benjamin Franklin created a very smart successful code in the story. If i were to create a code with a book i would use the eighth grade social studies book. Yes this code would only work for eighth graders who have this version but thats ok. I created the code to be that way, so no one other than class mates could understand it.

  26. Christian F Says:

The book I would use would be the Bible. The Bible is in almost ever house and has so many codes that you could use from it. It would also be very easy to make a coding system from it because the Bible has who wrote it, what chapter, and then what verses. I would not use a certain book if I was trying to include a certain group of people. This is why I would chose the Bible as a book to hide codes in.

  27. Keegan M Says:

If I were to use code I would use the Webster Dictionary to uncover it. Most people have the dictionary so more people could read the code. I would not use a certain book for only a certain amount group if people. That is my opinion about codes.

  28. Mackenzie E. Says:

The book I would use is the bible because almost everyone in the world has it. Many people could access this book easily. If I was trying to have only a certain group of people be able to discipher the code in the bible I would pick a particular bible like the Catholic Bible, not just a Christian one. This would be a easy book to find a code in and would help a lot.

  29. Christopher G Says:

I would most likely use a dictionary, because not everyone is catholic so they might not have a bible also i wouldn’t use a newspaper because not everyone gets a newspaper. A dictionary would be the most reasonable book to use because pretty much everyone has one. Yes i would use a different book for a certain group. Say the group was all catholic then i would defintly use a bible. Since almost every catholic christian has a bible.

  30. Anthony K. Says:

If I was to write a similar code to Ben Franklin’s I would probably put it in a dictionay. I would put my code in a dictionary because there are alot of words in a dictionary and it would be hard to decipher. Almost everyone looks to a dictionary for help so it would be interesting to see who would be able to break the code. I would not use a certain book if I was only trying to include a certain group of people. If I came up with a code, I would most defiently put it in a dictionary.

  31. Lauren G. Says:

If I were to make a code based on a book, I think I would choose a dictionary. This may seem like an obvious book to pick, but there are many different editions of this book which may make it hard to track down the correct copy. Also, instead of using the actual word in the dictionary, I would use a word from one of the definitions in the dictionary. If I was trying to communicate with a specific group of people, such as my friends, I would use a book that I had told them about or one that they had seen me read numerous times.

  32. Allie C. Says:

The book I would use would be a dictionary. I would use a dictionary because there are a lot of words in there. It would be very easy to write code using the dictionary. Another reason is because you could use any word you want because almost every word is in the dictionary. No, I wouldn’t use a certain book if I was just trying to include just a group of people. That is why I would choose the dictionary to write in code.

  33. Michael S Says:

If I would make a code similar to the one in the book I would use is the dictionary. i would use the dictionary rather than the bible or other books because some people might not have a bible in there house because of there religious beliefs but the bible has nothing to do with religion and will not pose as offensive to anyone. But if I was to use this code for a certain group of people, such as Catholics only, I would definitely use the bible because every catholic has the bible. If I would use code like they did in the book I would definitely use those two books.

  34. Jackie F. Says:

If I were to write a similar code like Benjamin Franklin’s, I would use the Bible. Most people around the world have read some part of the Bible. There are many words, phrases, and pages that people could use to create a code. Nowadays, the Bible is very popular and I believe that, since there are a great variety of words, people would look up the code. I would definitely use a certain book if I was trying to include a certain group of people. For example, if I were trying to talk to my friends in code, we all have read at least one book that was the same, so I would use that book. There are many books that could be used for codes.

  35. NickM Says:

If I had to pick one book that most people have I would pick the dictionary. Most people in society have easy access to this book. Another reason would be that a lot of people use the dictionary. Finally I think it would make it easier for the person receiving the letter to finish deciphering the code sent to them.

  36. Abby W Says:

The book I would problary use would be the Bible. I don’t know anyone wouldn’t be able to access a Bible. I choose this book because there are a lot of things you could chose from to do a code about. And no I would not use a certain book to get the code to certain people.

  37. Jacqueline M 8b Says:

If I was trying to only contact Catholics/Christians using a coded message, I would use a certain book that other religions don’t have. The only book that I can think of that almost every Catholic or Christian would have would be the bible. I would choose the bible because it’s the main resource of our Catholic faith. Almost every Catholic should have one. My code for my message would be the same as Benjamin Franklin’s from the book: page number, line, word. No one else would be able to crack the code because only Catholics usually have a bible in their home.

  38. Jennie D. 8A Says:

If I could pick a book that anyone had access to so that I could send messages in code, I would use the bible. I would use the bible because there are so many different words that I could use to send in the code. Anyone has access to it whether they are in Europe, Australia, America, et cetera. I probably wouldn’t only try to send messages to certain people, but if I had to, I would tell that person what other book to use to decipher the code. Those were a few reasons I would use the bible to send messages using code.

  39. heidi h Says:

If I hade to come up with a code that would be deciphered by a book I would use the Bible. A Bible is a very easy book to find. They’re in hotels, at book stores, and already owned by tons of people. It would be easy for someone to decipher this code. However if I only wanted my friends to be able to decipher the code I would use a common magazine most of my friends read. A magazine that we get monthly so only we could keep up with the issues. I would use the articles for the words, and our messages would be super secret.

  40. Ben S. Says:

If i were to write a similar code today this is what type of book i would use to decode it. I would use a dictonary because dictionaries are acessible to nearly everyone in the United States. The code system i would use would be similar to the system used by the Americans the number of that letter used in the alphabet and so on until the word is decoded. This process would take a long time but it would work very well. That is what book i would use for a similar code system.

  41. Haley G. Says:

If I were to pick a certain book for a code I would pick the bible. I chose this book because everyone could or has access to a bible and anybody could figure out the code. That way nobody would be left out. Yes, I would use a book if I were only trying to include my friends because we might have secrets that we don’t want everybody to know. The book I would use would depend on the group of friends or possibly just one friend. If it were to include all of my friends I would probably use maybe a book in the Clique Series because all of my friends have read them. Those are what books I would use for a code for everybody or just friends.

  42. Jake O Says:

The book I would use for codes today would be the Bible. I would use this because a lot of people in the world have this book. There are a lot of words in the Bible so it would have almost every word. It would be good for talking to only Christians because other religions wouldn’t have a Bible. The only problem is that there are a lot of different versions of the Bible.

  43. Rachel W Says:

If I could make a book of codes for everyone to understand, I would choose to make a bible. I think this would be simple because almost every Catholic knows the bible. I probably would use a differant specific book if I was trying to only include certain people because then those certain people would be the only ones to know what that book/code means.

  44. Elias N. Says:

If I were to choose a book that almost everyone has or could access, I would choose a dictionary. Almost everyone has one in their home and a dictionary is filled with lots of words and definitions. I do think that by using a dictionary you might exclude some people. People that can’t read might not have a dictionary or access to one so they would be excluded.

  45. dillon c Says:

I agree with Jack P. because the bible would be great for a code. During a war, you could be killed for worshiping God. It is also important to worship God, and some people might even ant to read it because, well maybe they might die soon, so they would want to be closer to God. That is why I agree with jack P.

  46. AndrewM Says:

If I had a book I would use for code it would be the Bible. A lot of people own one and it is easier to use in code because the verses are already kindof in code. But not everyone is religious so this might also have a downfall. But I think that the bible would be the best book for a code nowadays.

  47. Brennan T Says:

The book that I would choose would be the Bible. Almost every house would have a Bible and they are all the exact same. I dont think that I would not use a certain book to include a certain group of people. It would make it to complicated to use more than one book.

  48. Maddie S. Says:

There are so many books in the world today that it would be hard to pick a book that everybody had. If I had to pick, I would use the dictionary because most people have dictionaries at their homes. The only problem with the dictionary is that there are many different dictionary editions. If I was trying to reach just a group of people such as Christians or Catholics, I would use the bible. Unlike in the colonies where there was only one edition of a book, today we have many, many different publishers, so it would be difficult to find a book everyone had. For a code that almost everyone could see, I would use a dictionary.

  49. Juliana C Says:

If I were to right a code using a book, I would use a bible because most people i know have bibles and if someone doesn’t have one they are easy to find and there are a lot of them. Bibles are also good for code because there are so many chapters and verses it would be difficult to crack the code easily. That is why I would use the bible to make a code.

  50. Ryan S Says:

If i were to use a code, the book would probably be a dictionary. This is because everybody uses a dictionary and everyone would know how to find what they are looking for. Also there is every single word that we use in the dictionary so it wouldn’t be hard to find. That is why i would use a dictionary for my code.

  51. Julian D Says:

In creating a code with a book, I would probably choose the Bible. Because the Bible has certain lines and is not usually changed with each edition, it would be a good choice. Also, almost every Catholic has a Bible in their house. Had I been trying to communicate with a different group of people, I would pick a different book like a dictionary instead, since people who aren’t Catholics don’t usually have a BIble.

  52. Alexia O Says:

If I where to make up a code I would use the dictionary. I would use this because almost everyone has a dictionary. Almost all words are in the dictionary. So you really wouldn’t have any problem trying to get people to understand. This is why I would use a dictionary for my code.

  53. Whitney H (8a) Says:

If I were to make a code from a book everyone had access to I would probably use the Bible. Just about everyone has access to the Bible so it would be the perfect book to use if someone needed to decipher a code. If I only wanted to include religious people it would also be a great book to use. There are many other books that I could use to make a code with.

  54. Ethan H Says:

I would probably use a dictionary, which would make it harder to decode. I would do this because the number scentences would be shorter, making the code look mor lik the numbers are equal to something, instead of page numbers and lines. And, every word in the english language is in their. I would have a problem with the edition of dictionary, so i would probably put the edition year on it. It would work for everyone, so if i wanted to appeal to a certain group of people I would probably use the bible.

  55. Dylan T Says:

If I had to write a code like Benjamin Franklin did, I would probably use the dictionary. I would choose a dictionary because a lot of people have dictionaries. They use dictionaries to help define words, so I would have the code be in the dictionary. I would not try to include a certain group of people. If I were, I wouldn’t want people to find out that weren’t supposed to. That’s the book I would use for a code.

  56. Kait E. Says:

If I were to write a code just like Benjamin Franklin I would use the dictionary. Very few people in our world don’t have it. However, it would have to be a specific dictionary because there are so many different types of dictionaries in our world. Many people have the same kind of dictionary so this would be the biggest possibility. If I wanted to write a code for a smaller group of people I would use a Bible, because this would refer to Catholics and Christians. This would be the most effective and best way to write codes world-wide and for a smaller group of people.

  57. Justice R. Says:

A book I would use to make a code would be the dictionary. A dictionary would be a good book because there are a lot of different words that I could use in a code. In some cases it would be right to use a certain book for a group of people. If I was trying to send a code to different places in the world, those people speak different languages so a dictionary in their language would be right. This is why a dictionary would be my choice to write a code.

  58. Allison C Says:

If I were to make a code using a book, I would most likely use the dictionary. Almost everybody has the dictionary and if they don’t, then it certainly wouldn’t be hard to find one. It also wouldn’t be hard to make a code in it since every word is in the dictionary. If I were only trying to include a certain group of people I might use the Bible. This is because not everybody owns a Bible, so not everybody can crack the code. These are the books I would use to make a code.

  59. Michael S Says:

I am replying to Christopher Gentry’s comment. I think that the dictionary would be better to use than the bible if you were trying to make a code that anyone could decipher. I think you were right when you said that using the dictionary would be better than using the bible because only Catholics or Christians would have the bible. But I think if I were trying to only let a select few read the code than I would use a different book. Such as if I wanted only the people in our class to read it I would use our math our science books. Good thoughts Christopher.

  60. Bridgette S. Says:

If I were to create a book used as a code base for eighth grade, i would make it our book, Year of the Hangman. This will eliminate the problem of who does or doesn’t have the book. The next book I would use if I were creating a code for a wider range of people, I would actually give a book to every family that was included in the code book, and have that be used as a base for our code book.

  61. ethan b. Says:

I think that if you make teens have all of the responsibilities of an adult would be a bad idea. For starters I think that if you make teens have to pay for all of there car bills and insurance they would be bankrupt. Or if they made teens become C.E.O’s of major companies that would be a recipe for disaster. But a big one is having kids get there own place. And have there own house or apartment. That is why I think kids shouldn’t have all of the responsibilities of an adult.

  62. SC. 8B Says:

Creating a code with a book, would be somewhat hard, and somewhat easy. In order to make a code easy, I would choose the bible. I would use the bible, because there are many codes in this book and it also has so many words. I definitely wouldn’t want to use a specific book on a specific group, because then it would seem more obvious, so I would use a book out of the ordinary. So by making a code, I would want to go the easy way, by using the bible.

  63. scout a Says:

I disagree with Elias when he says that the dictionary would be best to use. There are many different editions of the dictionary and it would be hard for a lot of people to get the same one. I think the Bible would be a better choice because they are all the same or mostly the same edition. I think that if people couldn’t read they wouldn’t really even be worried about reading a code so it wouldn’t matter if they could read or not. I agree with you though when you said some people don’t have access to a dictionary.

  64. Matt G Says:

Here is the book I would use if I was to create a code that everyone could use. I would pick a bible because almost everyone who is Catholic has one. There are many Catholics in the United States, also making it a good choice. If I was to pick a book that only people in Arizona could use I would pick the phone book. Just about everyone has a phone book. That is the books I would choose to create a code.

  65. Tyler S. Says:

If I had to choose a book to write code with I would use the bible. I would use the bible because almost every person along with every hotel in America has a bible. If you didn’t want a certain group of people to understand the code you could use a catholic version of the bible. This is why if I had to write in code for whatever reason I would defiantly use the bible.

  66. Ellen S Says:

I would use a Dictonary if I were to code something for many people. Ther reason is that some people I would contact may not believe in God or have religious veiws, but the Dictonary is standard and many people have them. Dictonary are also in many stores and places like libraries so even if you dont have them they are useful in many places. If I were to only contact a few special people I would tell them about a book or story, example like Year of the Hangman or Mobey Dick so they know which book and many people wouldn’t think of a specific book like that. Those are the books I would use for a code.

  67. Megan S Says:

The book I would create a code from is a cookbook. Every family has a cookbook or a recipe book to look form for example the Betty Crocker cookbook. There are many words and phases in cookbooks and you could go to the library to find the book if you don’t own that cookbook. Most people cook from recipes in cook books to start out and then they get better, but they don’t throw the books away they keep it incase they need to look up a recipe. Also you could buy it or barrow it from a friend. The book I would use to create the code would be from a cookbook.

  68. Bentley B. Says:

If I were to create a code with any book I would use Sports Illustated, because almost everyone in the United States orderes Sport Illustrated so it would be very easy to get a lot of to use this code. If I were trying to only include a certin gruop of people in my code I would use a certain book that not everyone has, but a book that this certin group of people have.

  69. Nat B. Says:

If I were making a code that would be able to be decoded using a book, I would have a hard time choosing the book. If I were trying to write a code to random people I would probably use a bible which most people have in their homes. If I was just writing a code to my friends I might even use one of the Harry Potter books, because I know that everyone has them. I suppose that the book that you use as the answer key depends on who you want to be able to get the message. Even if you know the people that you were writing to it would probably still be hard to know which books people have.

  70. Megan S Says:

I am responding to Mackenzie E answer about the question what book would you use to create a secret code. I disagree with her because most people around the world are not catholic and they would not read the bible. Also the person you are trying to communicate with by a secret code might be offended by having to read from the bible if they do not believe it God. There are also different types of bible so you would have made sure that everyone has the same bible. Another thing is where would you find a bible if you do not have one, would you go to a church, a library, a friends house, where would you go if you do not have a bible at home. These are some reasons why I disagree with you about using a bible to create a secrete code.

  71. Tommy E Says:

If I were to write a code I would base the code on a dictionary. The dictionary is very popular and very useful for many people. If I was using a code for a small amount of people I would use a book that all of us know and are familiar with. That way other people can not easily find the code out. I think this is a good method because the group will know but others will not.

  72. TOM R Says:

If I would have to choose a book it would probably be the phone book. Everybody has a phone book and they should have no trouble decoding it because it would all be the same. If I were to send long distance messages I would choose the thesaurus. Many people should have a thesaurus.

  73. Tommy E Says:

Kevin, i agree with your statement. A bible is a good source for a code. It is very big so there can be a lot of different codes. Many poeple use the bible so it would not be hard to make a code. Other than a dictionary, that would be the next thing i would use.

  74. Dominic B Says:

If I would have to use a book to write a code I would use a dictionary. I would use the dictionary because mostly everyone has one in their house and if they don’t they have access to one. With the dictionary, it is so big, so there are many ways to make codes which would make it harder for someone who doesn’t know the code to find out. Yes I would use a certain book if I were only including a certain group.

  75. nate h Says:

I disagree with Tom R. I think using a phone book for a code message would be a bad idea. Not everyone has the same phone book which could lead to confusion. A phone book would also be bad because not all the words are in a phone book. It’s mostly only numbers and names. A phone book would not be a good book to have secret codes in.

  76. Christian F. Says:

I am responding to Tom R. Yes, I do agree with Tom R. because almost everyone has a phonebook in their house. A phonebook would work the best for sending codes to people because if you wanted to use a dictionary they are not all the same. There are so many different dictionaries. A phonebook would also work very good because there are so many codes that you can make with them. That is why I agree with Tom R’s answer.

  77. Mackenzie E. Says:

I am responding to Shannon E. answer. I agree with Shannon. I agree with her because the Marian- Webster Pocket Dictionary is a perfect code book. This would be a perfect code book because almost everyone has this dictionary and dictionaries have many words that would be great to make a code out of. Also if u didn’t have this dictionary you could find it very easily. These are many reason why I agree with using the Marian- Webster Pocket Dictionary for a code book.

  78. Justice R. Says:

I disagree with Haley G. Not every one in the world has a bible because some people don’t beleive in God. Plus there are alot of different releigons and every religon has different stories in their religous books. However I agree with Haley on using a certain book to send codes to friends because it’s easy if all your firends all have the same book.

  79. Tyler S. Says:

I am responding to Tom R and his statement. I disagree with using the phone book because phone books our different for every city and state. I also disagree with using a thesaurus because there our many different versions. This is why I disagree with you.

  80. Lauren G. Says:

I disagree with Abby W. because it might be harder to acquire a Bible in different countries. In some countries where only a certain religion is allowed, finding a Bible would be extremely difficult. Another reason I would not use a Bible for a code is because it would be very easy to decipher.

  81. Allison C Says:

I am responding to Heidi H. I think her answer to the question is very good. Many people already own the Bible. But if a Bible wasn’t one of your belongings, you would be able to get easy access to one. Also, the magazine was a very good idea to make a code for a certain group of people. I agree fully with what Heidi has said.

  82. Dylan T. Says:

I agree with Tom R. I agree with him because mostly everybody has a phone book to find numbers. That way, the code would be easy to decipher. A thesaurus is a good idea too. Some people have thesaurus’ and some don’t so if you want, only certain people will be able to decipher the code.

  83. Jordan S Says:

I agree and disagree with Lauren G. I used the same book as her in my code, but mine would be a little less complicated. I would use the actual words instead of using the words in the definition. Using all those words may make it confusing. Overall, Lauren had a good idea.

  84. Ellen S Says:

I agree with Tom R. I think he has a good idea with the Phone Book. I would of never thought of it, its a great recomendation for a code. Tome makes a good point that everyone hase them and they wouldnt have many problems decoding things. I also agree with his thesaurus idea. I think those were good choices.

  85. Juliana C Says:

I am responding to Tom R. I agree that a phone book would be a good book to use becuase almost everybody has one or can easily get access to one. I disagree though, about the thesauras because not a lot of people might have one, becuase I don’t even have one. That is what I think about Tom’s answer.

  86. Nick D 8B Says:

I am responding to Tom R. I agree with using the phone book as the key to a code. If you were trying to talk to people in your state then everyone would have a phone book and it would aways be the same.

  87. Nick M Says:

If I were to agree with someone it would be Ethan H. The dictionary would be very useful in making a code in todays society. First of all is that almost every house in the country. The next reason is that it would be very easy to decipher because if you figure out that it was a dictionary it would be able to sort out pages, sentences and which word it was. Another good book to have would be a phonebook because almost all people have this item. In all these books would be very easy to use in deciphering codes.

  88. Grace K Says:

If i were to compose of a code using a book, i would use the Dictonairy. I would not nessicarly consider using a Bible because only the followers of that religion would contain ownership of that book. In this case i think a dictionary would be the best choice. Almost all americans have an accesible dictoniary. Weather it is at home, work, school, library and etc. Now a days, they even have dictionary websites online. The only issue with this is that there are many different types of dictionaries. Some people have different volumes, and edditions, and issues. In keeping everything persistant i would just choose the, Merriam Webster Dictionary. This is my reasoning for picking the dictionary, for code language.

  89. Grace K Says:

Danny G, i agree with your choice of your code source. I think that if you only want a certain group of people to understand your code, you should use a resourse that many outsiders can not get ahold of.

  90. Anthony K. Says:

I am responding to Dillon C.’s answer. Dillon, I agree with your response, but also I do not. I agree with your opinion about putting the code in the bible because you would look to a bible during the war and be able to crack the cods, but I do not sgree with it because anybody can read the bible and an enemy could easily figure it out. The bible is a great place to put a code but it sometimes would not be. Dillon, I agree and do not sgree with your response.

  91. ali s Says:

I would definitely use the bible. There are just so many chapters to chose from. They have the New Testament and the Old. You could choose from Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. You have a lot of choices, and almost everyone would have one.

  92. Elias N. Says:

I agree with Sarah F regarding the invention of electricity. This invention totally changed they way people lived, the way business was conducted. With electricity people became able to do things at night. People stopped relaying on sunlight to do things.

  93. Elias N. Says:

I agree with Nick M’s choice of the dictionary. Although the bible is a really good idea, I don’t think that many people read their bible too often. A dictionary on the other hand is probably used more on a daily basis to look up definitions and spelling of words.

  94. Sarah F Says:

I am responding to Shannon E’s statement for question 2 that says that she would use the Marian-Webster Dictionary for her code. I think that, although this is a good idea, not everybody would have that certain brand of dictionary. A better choice would have been just any dictionary. Also, because she said a pocket dictionary, it would not have all of the words that a normal dictionary would have. So unless you specifically told someone to get a “Marian-Webster pocket dictionary” then most people would not be able to decipher the code. It would be a much better idea to use a book that everyone already has, rather than something so specific.
