Enemies of the Patriot’s cause felt the need to destroy the place where The Liberty Tree newspaper was printed. What do you think this says about the power of the press? Can you think of a recent example in which a newspaper became a powerful tool in waging war or impacting world politics?
September 17, 2008 at 5:45 pm
I think this say’s that the press has a lot of power towards the people and the country. A recent example is when 9 11 happened the press was all over it and war broke out. The press can tell the citizens anything even a lie if they wanted to.
September 22, 2008 at 5:18 pm
The press has a lot of power. A lot of people believe every word that is in the newspaper or on the news. The news and newspaper tell the truth but twist the details a lot. They make it more interesting. In WWII they used newspaper as propaganda to tell people that their side was always winning and never losing. Newspaper and propaganda are very important in any war.
September 22, 2008 at 7:40 pm
The power of the press can do many things. The press is very powerful and can spread false rumors about people and everyone would believe it. The English were scared that the Americans would put false things about them and make another rebellion possible. The press or newspaper has been a problem in today’s society because there are many false things put in todays newspapers. Many people get a little bit angry because they know that those rumors are false.
September 22, 2008 at 8:05 pm
I think the power of the press shows how much news is coming out. If you find news, you would want it in there. There was probably something in there that the Enemies wanted out of there. It was Creighton’s fault that he let Benjamin Franklin died. He could have stopped him, or even not told his uncle where he was.
September 23, 2008 at 4:37 pm
The power of the press is very large. This is shown when the press is burned down by the enemies. It has a lot of power because it gives news to everybody in town. A recent example is when the paper comes out everyday telling us about how the candidates running is doing. Also on the war in Iraq.
September 23, 2008 at 5:13 pm
The fact that enemies of the Patriot cause felt the need to destroy the place where the Liberty Tree was printed simply reaffirms the power of the press. This shows that a newspaper has the power to ignite people into action and to cause a revolution of sorts. This simply proves that printed opinions can make people think, can help them to make decisions, can bring them into war. One recent example of the power of the press would be the Olympics. The articles about China cheating soon started many indignant people protesting about the unfairness. The power of these newspapers may have started another sort of revolution: a revolution of rule breaking. This news simply told people that it is alright to cheat and to bribe officials in order to make your country look better. Power of the press is still demonstrated today, in good ways and bad. This power can be used to ignite people for a good cause, or to make them realize that some moral aspects of life can be ignored.
September 23, 2008 at 7:40 pm
The press is a powerful tool in both politics and wars. The English destroyed the place were The Liberty Tree was being printed because this paper was inspiring the Americans to revolt for a second time. In more recent times, the press is influencing the Presidential Elections of 2008. Americans read different newspapers and depending on which candidate has more of the press on its side, that candidate could get more votes just because of the press. The press is more powerful than any one person could be.
September 23, 2008 at 8:05 pm
I think that this says that the English obviously thought word was getting out and it needed to stop and the press was the cause of some of there problems. I can think of an example like with the election coming up and 2 great candidates that it would be hard for people to decide. If a local or state newspaper put out a positive or negative article about the candidate it could affects his/her votes in that city or state. With many articles in newspaper about the declining economy and energy crisis, many people could disgree and get mad about it.
September 23, 2008 at 8:50 pm
I think that the fact that the patriots had to burn the place where the liberty tree is printed says that the press has a lot of power over what people think and do. One example I can think of where the power of the press has actually affected the government or made countries wage war on each other is when America was on the verge of war with England and the Boston massacre occurred the press depicted it as a huge bloody killing of Americans from the British. In actuality the British fired out of fear for there lives. Americans were throwing stones in a riot against the British soldiers. The riot got so out of hand that a soldier fired his weapon out of fear. That shot hit a man and caused the riot to go insane with fear and rage so the Americans started to attack the British and the British started to fire for their lives and they killed only four people. The press depicted it to be an execution of Americans by British. The press can make people think that things are something totally different from what it really is.
September 23, 2008 at 8:50 pm
The power of the press greatly effects the people who hear about it. This year’s election is an example of the power of the press. Political commercials that are made to put down a candidate affect the minds of people watching them. They send thoughts that aren’t exactly true into their minds, and it changes what they think about the candidate. That is how powerful the press is.
September 23, 2008 at 9:10 pm
I think the power of the press is huge. Many people’s opinions can be won or lost by what they read or hear in the news. In the example in Year of the Hangman, the English were threatened by Benjamin Franklin’s newspaper, the Liberty Tree, because it promoted American freedom. An example in more modern times of the power of the press is in this year’s election. The media seems to be very pro- Obama and anti- Sarah Palin and John McCain. Some people who do not know anything about the candidates might be more inclined to vote for the wrong person. I think that media should be balanced and that the power the press has over Americans is tremendous.
September 23, 2008 at 9:29 pm
This example represents the power of the press. It represents how much effect the press has on peoples’ lives. Many people have very different views on things. One person may think the article is good, when another could think it is unfair and untrue. This can lead to violence and even war. A real life example is the Campaign advertisments. John Mcain and Barrack Obama create many commericials that are not alwayys excepted by people. This can effect the politics because if one of them sais something that is “untrue” in someones’ perspective, they could gain a reputation of lying.
September 23, 2008 at 9:34 pm
I think the power of the press has an immense impact on politics and wars. In many ways it can change the course of an election or a war. One example of the press changing an elcection is when the press finds dirt on either of the canidates. A way in which the press can change the course of the war for the better is by showing the positive outcomes and what is being gained rather that lost in a war. An example of the press’s effect today is how the press seems to favor Obama and Biden rather than McCain and Palin. Those are some ways in which the press has greatly impacted politics and the wars.
September 23, 2008 at 9:40 pm
This says that the power of the press can be a good and bad thing. Newspapers can print things to upset people. They can print important issues people care about. In recent tabloids, newspapers have talked about the war in Iraq. Many reporters have a left wing view of the war and slightly write in a Democratic manner.
September 23, 2008 at 9:44 pm
The power of the press does affect many people. Enemies of the Patriot’s cause felt the need to destroy the place where Te Liberty Tree newspaper was printed because they didn’t like or agree with what was being said. They felt threatened by it. This says that the power of the press can change or make someone’s opinion. A recent example is the 2008 Presidential Elections. Advertisements, articles and other things are written in opinion. The power of the press can shape someone’s mind, and basically tell them what they should think.
September 23, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Since the place where The Liberty Tree newspaper was printed was burnt down, it said so much about the press. The power of the press then and now is huge. An example of the power of the press in Year of the Hangman is when the English felt vulnerable by the paper. Today, people believe anything that the press puts out in today’s world. When there is something in the paper about celebrities, we think it is true or we don’t know the story behind the actions that they did. This also applies to the candidates running for president this year. Many more people support Barak Obama than they do John McCain even though they might not know their plans and goals that they have for us and this country. The press today is a very powerful influence in our lives.
September 24, 2008 at 12:49 am
The printing press is an amazing tool, that be used for printing newspaper. The English had destroyed the place were the Liberty Tree newspaper was printed because it was a valuable tool to the Americans. An example of the power of the press would be that all the products in China are made with lead in them. This caused the readers to read more about it, saying that they didn’t want their children playing with these “Aqua Dots” because of the lead in them. So many people here in the United States are now watching what we buy from the stores, because we don’t want to get sick from the lead in the products being made from there. This also caused China to watch what they are making since the people of the United States do not want China products made of lead. This can be good and this can also be bad. This issue could be ignored or it can be bad, and having your kid get sick from sucking on lead. But it is still always true, in fact the printing press is still the most amazing tool ever known made.
September 24, 2008 at 12:57 am
Sarah, I totally agree with you with all the Olympic China unfairness. I too don’t believe that it is fair for that outrageous rule breaking section. Yes, it can make people think about what they are reading in all, but it doesn’t mean that the readers will be interested in just that one topic about rule-breaking. I Mean after the Olympics no one really cares what happened except for the history breaking of Michael Phelps, all the rest is just thrown away. Don’t get me wrong this topic is very good; it just can die out very quick. Something that would catch the reader’s eye is something that has to involve everyone and not just one specific thing. I still agree and half way disagree with you, but the writing that you took time to type is very well written and I give you props for that. That would probably be my opinion.
September 24, 2008 at 9:53 am
I Think that the power of the press in this case is huge to the patriots. The press in this case was able to change the minds of the people. The British did not want any rebellion so they burnt down the print shop. One example of a newspaper that is a powerful tool in waging war and impacting world politics is the New York Times.
September 24, 2008 at 2:38 pm
When the British burned the place where the Liberty Tree was printed just says that the press convinces people to go against the British. The newspaper encouraged people to rebel and to help the Patriots. One recent example is the Apple Mac commercials. They are using a stereotype of a man who works with Microsoft who is refered to as nerdy, and the Mac guy is cool. This is an example of using the media and the press to influence other people to buy a product.
September 24, 2008 at 2:39 pm
I think that the power of the press can hurt or turn people against a certain group of people. It can do this by the press printing something on there paper and having the readers read it and them turn a group of people against them. By doing this it can lead to people from the press getting attacked or harmed or like in the book the press actually getting burnt down.
September 24, 2008 at 3:40 pm
After seeing what the enemies of the Patriot’s cause did when they found out where the newspaper was being printed, it definitely shows what huge power the press has. A newspaper is a very effective way to either influence people, make people think, persuade people, or cause people to riot. This happens all the time in real life, in both good ways and bad. Newspapers can make people aware of things going on in the world, and make them want to help. But newspapers can also persuade people into making bad or biased decisions on who to vote for, or causing them to believe a rumor that isn’t true just because it was printed in the press. Newspapers often make decisions for people, causing them to want to fight and wage war because what they read makes them angry. That is why the press has so much power.
September 24, 2008 at 3:59 pm
The Press is a huge impact on our country. What the Press does is they go around to different events, or interviews and take all the information and put it on paper for everyone to read. But when they change it to be put on paper it isn’t always true. A lot of the time the Press takes facts and information and they twist it around so it means something completely different. In the presidential elections going on right now the press is going crazy. But some newspaper or magazine companies are in favor of different candidates so what they do is they make the candidate they like look good and the other candidate look bad. But really they are both very good candidates.
September 24, 2008 at 4:19 pm
I believe that the power of the media can shape a whole country. The Liberty Tree printing shop was destroyed because the English thought it was putting rebellious thoughts into to the minds of the colonial people. Next it probably said some things that were considered “anarchistic” or meaning against the idea of hierarchy. I definitely think that the media has tremendous power over the country because they can choose what they want to share with the public and what they don’t want to share. A recent example of this is the up coming elections. Some might argue that the media is too liberal. The media can greatly effect the outcome of an election and of other political things.
September 24, 2008 at 4:29 pm
I think the power of the press has a much bigger impact on the people of America then people would expect. Many people today read the newspaper or tabloids, magazines, etc. Everything press says will be taken into consideration and made a bigger deal than necessary and people really do believe what the press says. The newspaper has been a big impact on today because of the elections coming up. People who are new to voting or can’t make up their mind on which candidate they want to win the election, are very influenced by the press and newspapers. Tons of people are hearing more about Barack Obama and less about McCain and Palin. So this creates a larger group of voters for Obama than McCain because of the impact of the press.
September 24, 2008 at 4:40 pm
The power of the press greatly effects the people who hear about it. This year’s election is an example of the power of the press. Political commercials that are made to put down a candidate affect the minds of people watching themThe send thoughts and ideas that put down the opponent and that are hurtful to them and to their campain. This is how the ideas and the power of them have greatly influncesed the press.
September 24, 2008 at 4:49 pm
The impact that the press has had on people throughout many years is huge. When the enemies of the Patriot’s cause felt they had to destroy where The Liberty Tree was being printed, that proved that the power of the press has been around since the 1800s. The power of the press persuades people to believe things that may or may not be true. People are used to reading something and just believing it and adjusting it to their way of life. Also, it can inspire people to believe and take action about some things. The power of the press is expressed nowadays in the 2008 Presidential Election. Many newspapers and television stations are supporting one candidate and not the other. Many newspapers are supporting Obama and are only stating good things about him and his history. Meanwhile, they are stating bad things or not important things about McCain. This can persuade people to vote for Obama and not McCain. The power of the press is enormous.
September 24, 2008 at 4:54 pm
This says a lot of things about the press, it means that lots of people read The Liberty Tree and they are scared that some British might do what Creighton’s dad did, join the Patriots. I don’t read newspapers but I do know how some things can have an impact on world politics. Some examples might be bad press for someone, like in this years election for president, I am pretty sure that many rumors were made and got to the ears of the people running for president.
September 24, 2008 at 4:56 pm
The power of the press is very powerful and can affect many people. It is very powerful because it can change how people view certain issues. One recent event I can think of that newspapers have made a big impact on politics is during the 2008 Presidential Elections. The press has a big impact on this because when people read about different candidates it can change how they think about that candidate and who they are going to vote for. As you can see the press has a huge impact on how people think.
September 24, 2008 at 4:59 pm
I think the power of the press is exceeding in great numbers every day. The press has the power to purcuade people to the right or wrong desicions on things. They have the power to lie or tell the truth. A recent example in which the newspaper became a powerful tool in civilians choices is most definently the newspapers, magazines, and even commercials about the 2008 Elections. The press does lie about it and slso gets people caught up on the truth.
September 24, 2008 at 5:13 pm
I believe that the power of the press can change even the most stubborn person’s views on a particular subject. The burning of the printing press shows that people can be inspired by strong writings of the press which probably worried the British. They didn’t want a rebellion. A recent example of the press is the presidential elections. Different networks show different sides of a speech or convention. On one network, the candidate can sound like the savior of our country. A different network can make them sound as though they’ll ruin the country. Even though the candidate delivers the same speech, the networks can add the commentary of the reporters and other things to make it sound different than it really is.
September 24, 2008 at 5:16 pm
I think that the press is very powerful and can influence people in many ways. The press still does influence us greatly in our world today. The current election is just one example of how the power of the press is still present in our world today. In the election the press will try to get us to vote for who they think we should vote for when it is not their place to tell us who to vote for in a presidential election. Who we vote for is our personal choice.
September 24, 2008 at 5:35 pm
If the English were willing to burn a building down to try and hide such a real secret, then that secret must have been one worth dieing and killing for. In todays society, when the paper interfered with Obama’s speech towards Palin and used his words against him, they worked furiously to back track, and set things straight.
September 24, 2008 at 5:39 pm
I am responding to Sarah F. answer. I agree with Sarah. I agree with her because the power of the press definitely could have an affect on how people view what is right and what is wrong. The power of the press also tries to make other countries look better and that could change how people think because what some people do in another country could change what people do here. So I highly agree with Sarah and we can see that the press is very powerful.
September 24, 2008 at 5:42 pm
I think the power of the press is great. The people who read it get hope about the war with England. If the Americans don’t have hope they probably wouldn’t win the war. I also told what was happening in the war and what happened to George Washington. It talked a lot about England and freedom from England. A recent example of something like this is when people use the media to help elect people such as the election this year.
September 24, 2008 at 5:45 pm
This is what I think that says about the power of the press. I think that this shows that the press greatly changes peoples’ opinions. The press effects what everyone thinks about people and events. One example of the press recently would be the 2008 elections. Many people read magazines and newspaper articles that are for a certain president, and then they are for that president. I think that the press should not effect people that much.
September 24, 2008 at 5:51 pm
This says that the press is a very strong news paper and the english people that see it don’t like at all. In todays newspapers, most is about Obama and how he is like a god. The people that are voting for him really don’t know what is good for america and they just want a black man a president. That is how newspapers can change people.
September 24, 2008 at 6:37 pm
I think the power of the press is a very big deal. Many poeple’s sayings in things are in the newspapers. Like their opinions and there ways of doing certain things. I think the Patriot’s burnt down where the Liberty Tree was being published because they were theartned with what Ben Franklin has been saying in the newspaper because he was talking a lot about freedom rights and such. In today’s times, the media talks a lot about movie stars and TV stars and all the drama that goes along with them. People sometimes read 2 or 3 differnet things about what is happening with satrs reltanoships, family bussiness, and what next big movie they are sarring in. People don’t know what to believe because they read so many differnet things about the person. The press, as you can see from wht I wrote, has a lot of power over the American people.
September 24, 2008 at 6:50 pm
The power of the press has been most important in the history and present times of the United States. Especially in this book, the press has an important, powerful, and well known role. Most everything said in the newspaper people tend to believe and take it to heart. Also the people who read it want to get out in the world and do something about it. One of the more recent examples of when the newspaper is impacting world politics is in the 2008 presidential elections. The newspaper tends to say it all, and quotes almost everything the candidate says. The presidential election has become sum what a battle to see who will win the presidency and lead the country.
September 24, 2008 at 6:56 pm
I agree greatly with what Maddie S is saying. First of all, the place where the printing of the Liberty Tree was burned, because it did promote things such as American Freedom. The power of the press has a huge influence on this year’s election. What Maddie has said about the media being pro- Obama and anti- McCain is definitely true. I have also noticed this situation myself.
September 24, 2008 at 7:22 pm
The power of the press is very big influence in wars and politics. The press can change people’s opinion over almost anything. In politics the press as in the newspaper or commercials can strike at the other candidate or promote them. An example in the power of the press would be this year’s presidential election. The press is mainly towards Obama/Biden where as they are almost completely against McCain/Palin. This could lead to more people voting for Obama/Biden just because the press will trash McCain/Palin. The power of the press is very important to politics.
September 24, 2008 at 7:44 pm
The press has enormous power because of the fact that people would burn down a building just for a peice of paper. Recently, newspaper has impacted a lot of topics in our world. It has been a powerful tool in the illegal immigration issue. It makes illegal immigration look very horrible. It is bad, but in truth, it is not as bad as it seems. Sometimes the newspaper’s impact can be good, and sometimes it can be bad.
September 24, 2008 at 7:51 pm
The press especially in colonial times was very powerful. People has not other way of getting the news. There was no T.V. or radio. What ever was printed in the news paper was thought to be the truth and could influence the way people felt about different issues. In the Middle East and in Korea for example the press is censored. Journalist are not allowed to print the truth about what the government’s are up to. Newspapers are a very powerful tool which can be used for good and sometimes for bad.
September 24, 2008 at 7:53 pm
The British felt the need to destroy the place where the Liberty Tree newspaper was printed because they found it as a very big threat to them, it would cause the people to really start thinking about the position they are really in and start to change it. I think this says about the freedom of the press is that they sometimes have a little too much power and take advantage of it. A recent example in the newspaper is when they talk about the war in Iran and they say who’s going to do what about it in the upcoming election. Sometimes things are posted that aren’t true or they all say something different. That is what I think about the power of the press.
September 24, 2008 at 7:59 pm
The press was extremely important in the war for the patriots. That is why the British burned down the print shop. In war you can you use the press to band citizens together. You can use the newspaper for propagnada and make the enemy seem worse than they might actually be. Now the newspaper is being used in politics for the 2008 presidential election. Each canadite does things to make the other canadite seem like the bad guy. That is why the newspaper is so important in war and polotics.
September 24, 2008 at 8:03 pm

I think the power of the press is very big. Many people’s opinions can be changed by the newspaper. I think they burned down The Liberty Tree newspaper place because they were against what the Patriots points of view. The newspaper can change peoples minds a lot. It sometimes doesn’t tell the truth so that makes people turn against or turn to whatever they are writing about. That is what I think about the power of the press.
September 24, 2008 at 8:26 pm
The power of the press is very big. The press can turn people against one another or instigate people to do a certain thing, like revolting against the Brits. I cannot think of a recent example of the press because I do not read the newspaper, but I can say that since the 08 elections are coming up, the two candidates are trying to tell people to vote for them in the newspaper. This is why the power of the press is important.
September 24, 2008 at 8:26 pm
The power of the press can get a lot of people in trouble. Some of the things they say people disagree with. They take their anger out on the newspaper. They are waging war against the democrats and republicans in this year’s election.
September 24, 2008 at 8:33 pm
This shows that the Liberty Tree was a very persuasive and powerful paper because people base a lot of their political beleifs on what they here from a newspaper or media. A paper would become a powerful tool against war or impacting world politics by telling secrets about the enemy, or for polictics promoting someone for a political campaigne or make a political opponent look bad.
September 24, 2008 at 8:44 pm
I think that the enemys of the Patriots attacking the place were the Liberty Tree was being writen was a powerful move for them. I mean the Liberty Tree was many tipes of things: war councles, secret messages, and many more. Also the power of that newspaper was also significant because it gave some Patriots hope. A newspaper in todays standers that has had a big signifigance was how the press is raging on the war in Aphganistan, on whether we should stay or go. Also on what the press is saying about the 2008 elections on what the next president will do about our foregn debts that need to be payed. Those are the diffrent types of things on how newspapers effect the world in everything.
September 24, 2008 at 8:44 pm
The newspaper could affect many things in the war, that is probally why the Brittish destoryed the printing press. THe press can show many people what is really happening and what should be down. Many people also look to the newspaper as a guide to help them in there lives. A recent example of this would be the news on the up coming election. The news is all in favor of Obama, so they are finding anything they can to use against McCain.
September 24, 2008 at 9:05 pm
The power of the press has become so large that it has a big impact on today’s society. The press and media in general influences many people’s lives. Throughout time, the press has created images in the publics mind. During wars, in creates images of battles and enemy forces in peoples mind. The press can ruin somebody’s reputation. Good writers in the press can easily change some opinions through their newspaper. This year, Republicans and Democrats compete in the 2008 Presidential Election. The media today supports both sides, although many more have supported Obama. Some newspapers have written stories highlighting McCain’s weaknesses and praising Obama. Because many younger voters are heavily influenced by television and the media, this is a clear example of the power of the press.
September 24, 2008 at 9:52 pm
When the enemies of the patriots burned down the shop where they printed the Liberty Tree, this means that the power of the press is powerful. They were worried that the printing shop and the newspaper could do damage to them. An example of when a newspaper became a tool of power is the elections. John McCain and Barak Obama say things to get people to vote for them. They say things to try to get people not to vote for their competitor.
September 24, 2008 at 10:43 pm
There are many people who look to the press for opinons, answers, and daily news. I think that the press has to much an impact over people today. In this day and age many people dont have thoughts for themselves and many listen to the media, and know what they read. When the Patriots burned the Liberty Tree I know that they didn’t want powerful words to get out the to people, so that the people would go against the Patriots.I think an example of todays minipulation from the media to the people is how Liberal the media is. They always go against Republicans and are never fair. It is always Pro Obama and Biden, and anti McCain and Palin. Many veiws would change if the media showed both sides of the polotics, but free speach will always go against that. That is how I think that the media has impacted life amoung people.
September 25, 2008 at 4:29 pm
I think that the press has an great deal of power. Many people’s opinions can change toward a certain cause because the media says that it is not “cool”. A recent example would be in Olympic gymnastics where people critizied that the Chinese gymnasts looked to small to be sixteen years of age. Soon it seemed like the whole world was protesting. This is the power that the media has on the world.
September 25, 2008 at 5:14 pm
I agree with Nate H. when he says that the power of the press greatly effects the people who hear about it. Look at politics today. Look at the political commercials and how they always have to say that the other candidate is bad and that they are a better choice. Sometimes people believe that and vote for that candidate just because of that. The power of the press sometimes changes peoples opinions.
September 25, 2008 at 5:31 pm
I am responding to Nate H.’s reply. Nate H., i agree with you about the elections this year and how much lies but also truth is going into peoples minds every day from newspapers and magazines. The power of the press is very powerful but many members of the press take that for granted often times and write lies in newspaper and magazine articles. Nate H., i agree with your reply.
September 25, 2008 at 5:48 pm
i agree with Nate H. because the power of the press is huge and this year is a great example. People try to put bad things into my head but i try my best not to listen. That is why i agree with Nate.
September 25, 2008 at 6:42 pm
I disagree with Meghan R. when she says that the press is more powerful than any one person. One person has the power to change the world if they know what to do. However, I do agree that a candidate could get more votes just because of the press. People, mainly young adults, are drawn in by the press’s coverage of Barack Obama. They’re new to voting so they might not understand the full power of the press.
September 25, 2008 at 6:49 pm
I completely agree with Nate’s statement. Now a day’s people are putting up lies about candidates. this can greatly affect the result of votes that they get at the end. They lie about stuff that is most of the time not true which i snot right to do. This is why i agree with Nate’s statement.
September 25, 2008 at 7:12 pm
I agree with Sarah F. It is true when she says that the power of the press is with the Olympics. When the press says that China cheated, people started believing that fast. People also might have gotten angry because they don’t think that China cheated. Sarah F. made some good points.
September 25, 2008 at 7:32 pm
I agree with Nate H. on how comercials are powerful press tools. Commercials are having all types of diffrent types of addvertyesments. Like army commercials and how they benifit your life. Or campain commercials so you’ll vote for that person. There are also commercials about joining other types of things in the military. That is why I agree with Nate.
September 25, 2008 at 7:49 pm
I agree with Sarah F. it does reaffirm the power of the press. the fact that it can cause people to bring themselves to do such an action just says how the press influences people in their everyday lives.
September 25, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Sarah F., I agree with you answer. I agree with you that the newspaper has the power to ignite people into action and to cause a revolution of sorts. People will believe anything that newspapers put out there and can make them do things that make bold statements and rebellious ones too. I think if you read something that sounds surprising or confusing, you should research it to see if what you read is true so that you won’t do anything regretful. I also think that your example about China and cheating in the Olympics is true and represents how powerful the press really is. Your answer really tells us how powerful the press is and to not believe everything you read.
September 25, 2008 at 9:16 pm
I totally agree with Maddie S. You can change your mind about something just by reading one article in the paper. Everyone these days wants change. What I want to know is if everyone is sure that Obama will change America for the better or for the worse.
September 25, 2008 at 9:24 pm
I agree with Maddie Stevens when she said that the power of the press is huge. Many people were threatened by Benjamin Franklin’s newspaper. Some people loved it and found it informative while others found it insulting and horrible. The 2008 presidential election is also like this in many ways. As Maddie said many people are for Obama and Biden while not many people want McCain and Palin to win for President. Also with the power of the press involved it makes things a whole lot harder to vote for a candidate. Most people may be voting for the wrong reasons too. This is what I agree with on the subject of the power of the press.
September 27, 2008 at 11:41 am
I agree with Nate. I agree with him because his statement about the presidental election was very true. Whenever I hear a president talk about his opponent, I always believe his words. It sounds like the candidate is telling the truth, but he is really just using his speech skills to suck the listener in. This is a common use in elections because they will do whatever it takes to get the vote of the people.
September 27, 2008 at 11:43 am
I agree with Meghan R. The press is very powerful in politics and war especially in the presidential elections. The press could be on different sides and depending how the writer writes the article it could be negative or positive on each side. Word also spreads faster by mouth and if you read it and tell someone about it they will read it too. What the press writes doesn’t have to be all the way correct, so if they lie about something the candidate did then they could loose a vote or gain a vote. Either way the press is a very important tool in the presidential election.
September 28, 2008 at 4:12 pm
2. I think that the press has a lot of power. Many people listen to the press and media to make decisions. The Patriots destroyed where the Liberty Tree newspaper was printed, because they felt that it had too much influence over the people. A recent example in our everyday lives today of how the press has impacted people is the 2008 Presidential Elections. The media has expressed their thoughts about each candidate and are either pro or con. Newspapers, magizines, radio stations, and television stations have influenced many American’s decisions in voting. The media needs to be more neutral in what they’re expressing. Instead of being either pro or con for something, they should show both sides equally. The media has a major impact in our lives.
September 28, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Responding to Sarah F: I agree with you. The media can either give good information or bad. I forgot about that whole ordeal with the Olympics. In that recent situation, the media gave news that was wrong and disappointing. The media has a lot of influence over people all over the world, not just the U.S. That was a great example of how the media has influenced people in a bad way.
September 28, 2008 at 5:54 pm
I’m responding to Maddie S. I agree with Maddie that the press is huge. I also agree that your opinion can be changed by the press and in her example vote for the wrong person. It’s important that you go with what you know and not what you always hear. That’s why I agree with Maddie S.
September 28, 2008 at 6:03 pm
The fact that the Liberty Tree threatened people who didn’t believe in the Patriot cause shows a lot about the power of the press. The Liberty Tree said things, and explained things that could allow the Patriots to rebel against England again. When people just saw this paper and read the strong feelings people had against England and for freedom they could have started supporting the Patriot cause. In more recent times we have seen the power of the press during this presidential election because you can certainly tell which newspapers are Democratic and which are Republican. Sometimes what newspapers would say could cause people to stop making their own decisions and rely on those of others, and hope that the newspaper journalists make right decisions. I believe that our society today relies too much on the thoughts of others in the newspapers or on television.
September 28, 2008 at 6:14 pm
I definitely agree with Sarah’s comment about how newspapers affected the Chinese controversy surrounding the Olympics. If people just had read the facts about things like the age debate surrounding certain athletes instead of reading a journalist’s take on things they could have made their own decision on what they thought was true. Sometimes when you read newspapers you can’t always tell what facts are, and what are just the writer’s opinions. Newspapers can definitely make people think that just because some well known person does something wrong, it can be considered the right thing to do. Sarah was right in saying that newspapers can make people do things that they normally wouldn’t do, good or bad.
September 28, 2008 at 7:22 pm
I think the power of the press has a great effect in our society. Many people take what they hear, and without even giving a second thought assume it’s true. In the politics, it seems like the media is against Sarah Palin and John Mcain. I can think of preticular “gossip” columns and websites that bash on her. The media seems to be on Barrack Obama’s presidental side. I constantly find myself reading negative things on Sarah Palin’s personal life. I think that people who read articles and things, can change their prospective on people and things and events, such as presidental canidates. This can change their vote, which detirmens who wins, so therefore the power of press has a massive effect over America.
September 28, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Nate H-
I agree to your responce to this topic. People in the politics, always put down and bring up upon the canidates. I agree with you where you said it can change what they think about them.
September 28, 2008 at 8:13 pm
I agree fully with Maddie S. The press was threatening the British. The presidential election is a good example of modern times. Truthfully, the papers do seem to support Obama. I think this is because the governor is Democratic. Maddie’s answer was very good.
September 28, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Enemies of the Patriot’s cause felt the need to destroy the place where The Liberty Tree newspaper was printed. This says many things about the power of the press. This says that the press has the power to print false information, distribute code, and many other secret messages to the public. A recent example in which a newspaper became a powerful tool in waging war or impacting world politics is when false and or confusing information about the proposed Government bailout of Wall Street. These our just some of the reasons that I thing that the printing shop of the Liberty Tree was burned down.
September 28, 2008 at 11:35 pm
The press is very powerful. The press prints out all the news and whatever is in the press, the people believe it. A recent example of the power of the press would be the election of 2008. This would be a good example because the press is printing out a lot of news about each candidate. So if the press says something good or bad about the candidate than the people may change who they’re going to vote for. So the press has a powerful affect over people.
September 28, 2008 at 11:39 pm
I agree with Nathan H. because he stated that the press is very powerful and has a great effect on people’s minds. I believe that also because people do have a lot of concern in the press. He also gave the example of the election of 2008 and so did I because that was the first thing that popped into my head because there is a lot of news going around about each candidate. So Nathan and I agree with basically the same things when it comes to the press.
September 29, 2008 at 6:10 pm
I agree with Nate about the statement. He is correct because when people hear a president talk, they usually believe them. When a president talks about another president, I think that is the truth. It seems like they are telling the truth, but really, they are just using their speech skills to suck you into believing them. Flase information is used in politics so the candidate can get more people on their side. In this way, the power of the press is very importnant in everyday life.
September 30, 2008 at 4:51 pm
I agree with Dylan T. that the enemies of the Patriots would burn the printing shop to keep it from doing damage to their way of life. They didn’t want to deal with rebellion.
September 30, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Jake O. i really like what you had to say about the question. Your answer made a lot of sense. Mainly how you said it gives the colonies hope to win the war. Also it is defintently a good idea to take out the press,so people don’t know what is going on. I agree with Jake O. completely.
October 6, 2008 at 11:29 am
I think that newspapers today have too much power. They have so much power that people can be killed because they have an opinion. The liberty tree is treasonous against the british and is very controversial. It is understandable that the source of it was burned down, but it was for the cause of American freedom. Its not right that it is considered treasonous because the british are limiting are freedom and we needed to fight against it. I think that the presidential election is cbeing controled partly by the press. It someone has good coverage and makes the good points of Barack Obama stand out, then he will probably get more votes that if there was bad coverage.
October 6, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Responding to Nate H: Here is why I completely agree with Nate on everything he has said. When he talks about the elections I instantly thought the same thing. He also states how the press changes peoples’ minds on who they want to vote for. I agree with that as well because that is exactly what is happening in the elections. That is why I agree with Nate.
October 7, 2008 at 8:35 pm
I believe that this says a lot about the power of the press. This means that it has a huge impact on people and could change many things. An example of today when a newspaper got too powerful was the 2008 Presidential Election. This influences many people because nearly everyone in the US, and possibly the world, watch it. These are just a few examples in how the press is huge.
October 7, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Dylan T I agree with you all the way. What you say explains a lot about the power of the printing press. What you said about the presidential election also explained a lot about the power of the press in today’s standards. Great job Dylan T.
October 8, 2008 at 4:24 pm
I believe the power of the press can affect many issues and people’s point of view on these issues. For exaple, articles in the newspaper talk about the 2008 presidential election a lot. Depending on what the article says about each candidate, people are going to have the similar opinions about the candidates. The power of the press can also affect war as well. The war in Iraq, for example, is a struggle for the United States. Many people want the war to end, but others want the war to continue. These are some reasons why the power of the press has a big impact on society today.
October 8, 2008 at 4:28 pm
I agree with Allison C. I never thought that people could actually be threatened by the press’ ideas. Though many people don’t burn printing presses, a lot of people probably do feel threatened by some of the press’ remarks about the Presidential election and many other topics in today’s society.
October 12, 2008 at 9:36 pm
I agree with Jack P. The power of the press is very important and will affect this year’s election. People will listen to the press even if the truth is not revealed. This is why i agree with Jack P.
October 13, 2008 at 6:14 pm
The power of the press is very strong and a lot of people trust and believe what there’re reading. An example when we read about the wars going on right now we believe everything we read. Also the press can change a person’s mind be saying stuff about candidates so we can vote for the other side.
October 13, 2008 at 9:31 pm
I agree with Christian F. Newspapers are an extremely powerful and importan tool when communicating with lots of people. In those days there was no radio or TV so newspapers were the only source of news. If the newpapers were detroyed then the people would not know what was going on in the war.
October 13, 2008 at 10:54 pm
It is very foggy to me why Burr would have killed Hamilton. I wonder if he had done it on purpose. Burr probably didn’t mean to kill him but to just sevierly hurt or injure him. The two had a rivalary from a personal and politcal standpoint so they probably hated one another. Weather or not this was done accidentally or purposly, there was most likey cruel intentions. Then again, I don’t think Burr should have fired the gun because there is always a very high chance the bullet will kill the person on the oppistie end. Still, I think Burr did not mean to take it too far as to where is life ends. This is what i think about the shooting Burr had done that killed Hamilton.

I agree with Abby W. response. It was almost like mine, and we have many of the same thoughts. She brings ups good points on how the press can effect and opinion and a veiw of a person or thing. Also I agree with why she said that, you dont know what to believe from all the different veiws from the meda. That is why I agree with Abby W.
October 14, 2008 at 8:58 pm
I completely agree will Jill L. She is right when she said that newspapers can print things to upset people, they can print important issues people care about. The Press can sway people’s opinion with what they write.
