This week you will finish the book. We have had multiple questions for each of the past weeks. This week you have just one question on which to comment.
The Year of the Hangman is a novel in which the author has taken a historical event and given it an alternate ending. Now it is your turn. This week your comment needs to be an alternate ending to The Year of the Hangman. Tell us how you would change the ending. Tell us what happens to the various characters. What happens to George Washington? What happens to Crieghton, his uncle, Sophie, Ben Franklin…….. This is your chance to write an alternate ending, be creative and good luck. Maybe the author will make a comment or two about your alternate endings.

If I had to make an alternate ending for the year of the hangman, George Washington would be retired, living his golden years out peacefully. Ben Franklin wouldn’t have died, and Creighton, saved him, and got an award from General Arnold. Sophie would still work for Ben with Creighton. Creighton’s uncle still died, and Creighton was very sad, but Creighton became an American, and is still printing the press with Sophia. Creighton gets to know Sophia so well that he marries her, and they continue living in bens house, and have 2 children. That would be my alternate ending if I had written the book.

If I could write an alternate ending to the Year of the Hangman, it would be a very happy ending. Creighton would continue living and working at Benjamin Franklin’s print shop. Benjamin Franklin wouldn’t have died, and Peter would also work with Creighton. Colonel Gower would still have died, because I did not like him as a character. Harry Brown would recover from his illness and everyone would live happily. The Revolutionary War would end soon and the Americans would win. George Washington wouldn’t have been hanged. I thought that Year of the Hangman was a good book, but I enjoy happy endings.

In the end of Year of the Hangman, the ending is okay but not very happy. If I could write an alternative ending, my ending would be happier. First of all, Benjamin Franklin would not have died but, as he kept working, he would get older, slower, and weaker. Sophie would continue living and working with Dr. Franklin and keep the paper going if anything was to happen to him. Creighton would also work at the printing press; but with his fully recovered father, he would go back to his family for a short time. He would then come back to America with his father and work and live the rest of their lives in America. Peter would work with Sophie and Creighton occasionally, but would be helping others in town. The Americans would win the Revolutionary War and George Washington would be right there winning and leading it instead of being in a graveyard. As for Colonel Gower though, he would have remained the same as he did in the book. I would keep him dead because personally, he was a rude, stubborn, and selfish character and I did not like him. The book overall was a good book that was interesting and enjoyable.

I would change the ending in many ways. I would have Creighton and Sophie get married. They seem to have a special connection. Then, at the wedding, Creighton’s dad appears at the back. They meet and talk for about an hour. Then, Creighton’s dad would get captured. Creighton followed his dad to the jail and found out a way to get him out. Instead of dying, Benjamin Franklin is taken hostage by some opposer of his newspaper. The guy threatens to kill Franklin if he does not stop the newspaper. Franklin has no choice but to give the newspaper up. Creighton’s uncle ends up dying from a disease, rather than from a duel. This book was very good. If i had to change some parts, this would be them.
October 1, 2008 at 3:56 pm
My alternate ending would be that George would die in a duel against Creighton. His uncle would be put in jail again for all the bad things he has done. Sophie will go back to France to visit her family and end up living there. Ben Franklin would not have died and stay a longer and create many more inventions. That is what my alternate ending would be to The Year of the Hangman.

The one major thing I would be the numbers that Colonel Gower gave Creighton were the cell numbers for George Washington and not for his father. This would potentially release George Washington and start the Revolution over again. Next he could have his father released by any jail if he said that he was the one who freed George Washington. Finally he would go back to Sophie and they would become great friends again and would not have rough feelings. These things I would change would probably make the story a little bit longer.

Creighton hoped that what his uncle whispered was where George Washington was being kept. If it wasn’t, what else could it be? He followed Arnold down the corridor and waited impatiently as he opened the door. A man sat there with his back to the door. Even though the cell was large, this tall man seemed cramped in it. He turned to see who was at his cell and Creighton was surprised at what he saw. The man had many scars from battle and his face was lined as though he was constantly frowning. Creighton had doubts that this was the general until the man stood. Then, he had no doubts. Washington was taller than Arnold and Creighton. Creighton couldn’t help being intimidated at the man’s sheer size. He had always thought that the Yankeys made up Washington’s size to intimidate the British. A flicker of recognition flashed in Washington’s eyes at Arnold, but then he said, “What do you want?” Arnold smirked and said, “We are here to take you to the governor, General Washington.” Arnold spat out the title as if it was an insult or a joke. Creighton frowned. Surely, Arnold was just acting. Even so, it was still quite harsh. Arnold pushed Washington out of the cell and marched him down the hallway, hurling insults at Washington as he went. Creighton followed behind and nodded to the guard, but he was too busy making shadow puppets in the candlelight to notice. Arnold kept the act up until they were safe in the sloop. Peter was already aboard and was silent in the presence of the general. General Washington smiled at Arnold. “That was some fine acting back there, Arnold.” Arnold grinned and said, “You weren’t so bad back there yourself, sir. We’re going back to New Orleans. The militia will be staging an attack on a British fort soon, and I’m sure you’ll want to lead it.” Washington nodded. The trip back was uneventful, which made Creighton even more anxious to get to the printing press and continue to help working. When they arrived, Sophie was there to greet them. She gave Peter a hug before remembering her virtues and curtsying. When Sophie saw General Washington, she gasped. “Now, perhaps we will be able to fight back and win the war!” Creighton nodded. “We just might.”
October 1, 2008 at 7:38 pm
If I were to make an alternative ending to the story this is what would happen. First, when Creighton and General Arnold went to the prison to release General Washington they would find both Washington and Creighton’s father. Second when the rebels attacked Pensacola, they would overpower the British and take over the fort and changed the course of the war. Finally, Sophie Creighton and Creighton’s father would continue running the printing press and distributing propaganda amongst the local populous. That would be my alternate ending to the story.
October 1, 2008 at 8:29 pm
If I were to change the ending of the Year of the Hangman I would make it so some important people could live. In my alternative ending I would want General Arnold to not challenge Creighton’s Uncle to a challenge to a duel; and they had found George Washington is the cell with Creighton’s father, so they could both be saved together. In my alternative ending I want George Washington to live and they fight in the battle at Pensacola. I would want Creighton to remain the way he is, changed and better because of it. I would keep Creighton’s uncle dead. I’d like Sophie to forgive Creighton earlier and have her learn humility. I would want Benjamin Franklin to keep living until after the book is over. I want Peter to become one of Creighton’s best friends and that he would help out in the printing shop. Then, I’d like General Arnold to be okay and not fight in the battle of Pensacola. That is what my alternative ending would be if I were to rewrite the Year of the Hangman.

In this alternate ending many things are changed. The Patriots barely win the war and our so vulnerable that the English hang one who are still alive. So, the English take over the Colonies once again. George Washington is going to get executed but one the last day of waiting, he escapes and satrts forming a new rebel group with Ben Franklin. Creighton goes back home with his father and they live with his mother and all of them are happy. Creighton’s uncle comes with them and they push him overboard and he is now a prisoner to the rebel group. Sophie opens up her own printing shop in England inside Creighton’s house and the rebel group stays there as well. Ben Franklin lives with Creighton until he died of old age. This is what happens to the main characters in my alternate ending.
October 3, 2008 at 8:01 pm
For the Year of the Hangman, there are quite a few things that I would change about the ending and the characters. For George Washington, I would attribute his death to a misunderstanding. The officers at the St. Marks Prison only think it was Washington that they executed, but really there had been some confusion amongst the prisoners. Instead of Washington, it would have been an untrustworthy American informant who had looked like George Washington after all of his months in prison. Creighton and Arnold would then have been able to rescue the real George Washington, but not before discovering Major Harry Brown. When they discovered Harry Brown at the prison and realized who he was, they would have also helped him to escape. Major Brown would eventually recover from his bout of sickness, and live a long life as a happy man. As for Peter, who would help with the prison break, he would soon rise up to be a leading officer in the 2nd Revolutionary War. Peter’s clever thinking, honest mind, and perceptiveness would help to lead the rebels to victory after victory. Peter and Sophie would eventually get married, after they finally realized how much they loved each other. Sophie would take over the printing press, leading the Americans in a moral victory over their bickering minds and divided hearts. Benjamin Franklin, though dead, would forever be remembered in the things she printed and the excerpts of his writing that wormed their way onto the pages. And as for Creighton, he would eventually become a leading Patriot, fighting for causes, bringing inspiration back to life, and living with honor. Creighton would live as Benjamin Franklin had, becoming a diplomat and writing his findings of human morality in revered books. All of the characters would win struggles of their own, while together leading the Patriots to victory in the 2nd American Revolution.

My alternate ending to The Year of the Hangman starts when Creighton, Peter, and Arnold go to St. Marks to find George Washington. When they get there, Arnold acts as a British Colonel and requests to transfer a prisoner, while Creighton acts as a soldier under the command of Arnold. That prisoner is George Washington. The very eager captain that guards the prison shows them right away to cell number four. When Creighton and Arnold get their, they find Washington, who is badly injured in the arm and leg. They plan to bring him back to New Orleans and help them fight at Pensacola along with the Spanish. They ask the guard to help them wrap up Washington’s arm and leg and he does right away. The guard leaves for a second to make sure that Arnold has the authority to take this very valuable prisoner away. Right as the guard leaves, Arnold, Creighton, and Washington bolt out of the cell and escape back to the boat. Creighton was horribly mad because he wanted to ask the guard if he knew the whereabouts of his father and to even know if his father was alive or not. They escaped to New Orleans, where everyone was amazed that Washington was still alive. Arnold, Creighton, and Peter went to Franklin’s home to let Washington rest. Creighton goes to apologize to Sophie. She doesn’t want to forgive him, but he begs and begs. She finally gives in and asks him to help her rebuild the printing shop, as it is still in ruins. He says that he would do it in an instant. They become friends again. In the end, the Spanish and the Americans win the battle at Pensacola against the British and all things are better. Most of the American prisoners are free and the Americans are happy that they are free from the dangers of the British forever.
October 4, 2008 at 4:51 pm
What if Benjamin Franklin didn’t die? I think the Americans would have better off if Benjamin Franklin hadn’t died. In my alternative ending, Benjamin Franklin gives the Americans help with the war. He helps them make good decisions on what to do. Peter, General Arnold, and Creighton still go on their mission, and rescue General Washington. With Benjamin Franklin giving them a tactical advantage ad General Washington leading the army, the American Militia is able to drive the British out of some parts of the nation, and they gain some territory. From that land, Americans are able to start their own civilization. Creighton still lives in Benjamin Franklin’s house, and helps printing the Liberty Tree. Americans finally have a place to be free.
October 5, 2008 at 12:39 pm
In Year of the Hangman the author creates an alternate ending to the Revolutionary War, but instead of changing history I am going to change the ending of this book. Creighton is still in captivity in Florida. Creighton and General Arnold have just been locked inside the cell with a man that is curled up in a ball on the small mattress. It turns out that the man is General Washington. The three of them are rescued by Peter when he dresses up as a guard and steals the keys to there cell. The four men escape and sail back to New Orleans. When they arrive they discover that Franklin is not really dead, but has been captured by the English. The book ends just as Peter and Creighton are preparing to set sail to rescue and return Franklin to safety and his home.
October 5, 2008 at 1:54 pm
George Washington is not hanged and is still alive. Sophie doesn’t forgive Creighton for what he did, but still let’s them stay there because they are hurt. Sophie and Creighton help Harry Brown as much as they could, but he dies. The Americans and Spanish win the war and everyone is celebrates. Except for Creighton because he finally met his father, and he never got to spend any time with him. That is my alternate ending to “The Year of the Hangman.”
October 5, 2008 at 7:58 pm
My alternated ending to Year of the Hangman is Creighton’s uncle and General Arnold didn’t die, and Arnold was still a spy for the Americans. Creighton found out where George Washington and his father are. He escaped back to New Orleans with Arnold and Peter. They told everyone the news and they sent a group of people to help Washington and Creighton’s father to escape. Creighton, Sophie and Franklin printed kept printing the Liberty Tree.
October 5, 2008 at 10:27 pm
I would change the Year of the Hangman ending in many ways. Instead of having Benjamin Franklin die from the fire incident, he would have lived. Then, the Americans and the Spanish would plan a surprise attack on the British. Peter and Arnold agreed to go and fight with the Americans to attack at Mobile. After a few days of sailing, they reached the British fort. That night they raided the British. Unfortunately, the British already knew about this attack, and were fully prepared. An American officer had gone over to the British side and told them the American’s plan. The Americans were easily beat by the British who had far more troops. Back in New Orleans, Creighton, Sophie, and Benjamin Franklin remained printing. After the war ended, Creighton found out that Arnold and Colonel Gower had both died. Also, George Washington and Harry Brown were released from being locked up. A year later, Creighton was reunited with Harry Brown and his mother. They lived in New Orleans from then on.
October 6, 2008 at 9:12 am
in my alternate ending america win the war. because america won his father is not captured and george washington is alive. because his father fought for america, crieghton and his mother now live in amrica. his father is friends with general arnold and general washington because his father became good friends with them when he fought against the british. cernal gower is dead. he was killed in the war. peter and creighton don’t know eachother. peter and crieghton don’t know sophie or dr. franklin because benjamin franklin did not move to new orleans. sophie doesn’t have to be his servant because her parents did not die. ben franklin didn’t die because of the fire because there never was a fire. that’s what happened to everyone in my alternate ending.
October 6, 2008 at 1:25 pm
This is my alternate ending to The Year of the Hangman. When Arnold and Creighton go to the prison where they believe Washington is they find Creighton’s father and they escape. On there way back to New Orleans thought they get in a battle with a British ship and only Creighton and his father survive. They then drift back to New Orleans on a raft that they made and return to the printing shop where Sophie takes care of them. They then have a funeral for Arnold and Peter who didn’t survive and then the book ends.
October 6, 2008 at 1:36 pm
In my alternate ending George Washington is about to get hung but his friends General Arnold, Creighton, and Peter rescue him on time. His uncle gets shot but he survives it and nobody knows it and he gets buried alive. Sophie ends up going home with Creighton and living with him back in England. Ben Franklin still goes in the printing press but he survives it but one of his legs has to get amputated because it got so badly burned. Creighton ends up going back to his home in England with his father and Sophie, and his mother when they get home is so glad to see them that she faints when she finds out that her husband is still alive. That is how my alternative ending would have been to the story, The Year of the Hangman.
October 6, 2008 at 2:48 pm
In my alternate ending a lot of things would be different. George Washington escaped from his hanging and ran off to the wilderness. But, no one has seen him sense. Creighton goes back home to his mom and his mom is surprised about how much he has changed. Creighton’s uncle survived but moved to Mexico. Sophie went to England with Creighton. Ben Franklin survived and continued working for the Newspaper. .
October 6, 2008 at 3:05 pm
This is how I would end the book. First off, when Ben Franklin goes into the building that is on fire to get all of his papers, i would say that he got out just before the building collapsed and he would live. Creighton’s uncle would not die in the duel and neither would general arnold. Both of them would just simply fire in the air and shake hands. Creighton’s father would not be alive and he would find out that he and General Washington were killed at the same time at the same place. That is how I would end the book.
October 6, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Benjamin Franklin would not have died. I would have had one of the British soldiers who had set the building on fire die. He would be in the burning building looking for more copies of the “Liberty Tree”. Benjamin Franklin would have been taken captive. Arnold, Creighton, and Peter would go after him to save him and with any luck find Washington as well. I still would have Creighton’s uncle die though. When Creighton and Arnold get to the prison they would find three men. Those three men would be General Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Creighton’s father. General Washington would be on his death bed and Creighton’s father would be sick as well from taking care of General Washington. They would all escape from the prison, only to have General Washington die by the time he got back to Benjamin Franklin’s house.
October 6, 2008 at 4:52 pm
My version of the end of The Year of the Hangman is quit different. In the end, Creighton finds George Washington in the jail cell, not his father. Creighton then rescues him, and they leave with Peter and Arnold. Creighton’s father, Henry Brown, was the one who got hanged instead of George Washington. Ben Franklin lives and Sophie continues to help him in the shop. Creighton, Peter, Arnold, and George get to Ben Franklin’s house and Peter and Creighton end up helping in the printing shop as well. Ben and George control the printing shop and they have Peter help handout the papers. That is my ending of the Year of the Hangman.
October 6, 2008 at 7:11 pm
My alternate ending starts off when Creighton is in the British HQ with his uncle. It is right when his uncle said to decipher the message. However when he is asked to decipher the message his uncle adds that if he does this that he will sail him first class back to Englnad. Creighton thinks about this for a while and finally says he would do it. He does it, and gives uncle the real message. But instead he asks if he could meet George Washington. His uncle in agreement takes him to the Prison when he gets there they meet George Washington and as they are talking Creightons uncle shoves him in the cell and locks him in with George Washington. His uncle laughs and as he is walking away Creighton pulls out a pistol and shoots him in square in the back. He couldn’t believe what he had done. When the other guards come in they open the cell and continuesly punch him in the face. As they are doing this George Washington swiftly sneaks out of the cell. 2 days later. George Washington had managed to meet up with some more Patriots and had brought confidence back to all of them. Meanwhile Creighton had been put on trial to be hung. As he slowly made his way to the gallows he was thinking, and he did not regret what he had done. Finally as there about to hang him at the fort he looked into the crowd and saw Peter standing there disguised. And as the rope was placed upon his neck he looked over to the hills nearby and saw American calvalry. And as he fell to his death he heard a horn and saw a charge of Patriots attacking the Fort.
October 6, 2008 at 7:42 pm
If I could write an alternate ending to The Year of the Hangman, I would have changed the fate of a few of the characters. I would have made it so that George Washington was saved right before he was about to be hanged. I would also make it so that Ben Franklin, Sophie, Creighton, Peter, and Creighton’s father all live with Franklin and keep on printing the newspaper. As for Creighton’s uncle, I would write that he was captured. I would make everyone live happily ever after and have the paper write about war in a different way. Rather urging people to stop it, instead of spreading information on it and encouraging it. That is how I would change the ending.
October 6, 2008 at 7:55 pm
When the guys dressed up as Indians to burn the printing shop down Sophie gets trapped in the shop instead of Ben Franklin and Sophie dies. Ben Franklin lives and keeps printing his newspaper. Arnold and Crieghton’s uncle get in a duel but Arnold gets killed by Crieghton’s uncle. Creighton’s uncle then finds out that Peters a spy and he puts Peter in jail with Washington. Then Creighton’s uncle finds out that Creighton has been helping the Americans out so his uncle deports him back to England. Then back in America Creighton’s uncle hangs Peter and Washington. Ben Franklin goes into hiding and survives and keeps printing his newspaper. Creighton just lives back in England with his mom again.
October 6, 2008 at 9:06 pm
I would make the ending more interesting and get rid of all the nonsense that the author puts in about war. In my ending the British in the fort would be doing the least there supposed to, which would also prevent the Americans from escaping. All the characters attempting the breakout would be caught and hanged and Sophie would still be angry and Creighton. Ben Franklin would die but his death wouldn’t be so “boring” and he would actually die of something interesting other the being weak.
October 6, 2008 at 9:32 pm
In my alternate ending Creighton reunites with his mother. The printing room does get burned but neither Franklin nor Creighton go in. Then entire building gets burned to the ground. Franklin and Sophie are very sad. Arnold takes better to go fight in the war with him, and Sophie and Franklin move to North Carolina to work at a larger printing press with other people. There they can peacefully live. Lieutenant Hale, and The Gower attempt to kill Peter and Arnold, however Peter gets shot, but Arnold dies. Peter finds Creighton who is living in Florida and they go to North Carolina to find Franklin and Sophie. There they discover that Franklin had died of old age and Creighton’s mother was there to look for her son. They tell Sophie about Arnold. Then Creighton and Peter go off and kill Lieutenant Hale and The Gower. When Peter and Creighton set out to find the two they led them straight to Washington. They’re the rescue him and he becomes president, and lead America to winning the War. Creighton and his mother end up living in Florida, right next to Peter and Sophie who got married and started a family.
October 6, 2008 at 9:39 pm
I have an alternative ending to the story. I would have kept Benjamin Franklin dead, because of the burning building. Lieutenant Hale would have assisted Creighton, Arnold and Peter with rescuing Washington and Creighton’s father. George Washington would still be alive, because Creighton, Hale, Arnold, and Peter broke in and got Washington before he was hung. Creighton was still shot in the leg but while he was rescuing his father with Peter. I would have had Colonel Gower die the same way through the duel with Arnold. Peter, Harry Brown, Sophie, and Creighton would run the Liberty Tree. Later on Sophie and Creighton would get married. Arnold would have returned to New Orleans and helped with the Liberty Tree. Eventually America would have won the war.
October 6, 2008 at 9:49 pm
In The Year of the Hangman the ending was very well written. However, my ending is different from the authors. In the duel against Arnold and Creighton’s uncle, the uncle barely survives and was still able to mention St. Mark’s number four. Creighton’s uncle is still recovering, but is now chasing down Creighton and Arnold. When Creighton and Arnold get to the cell they find that Washington did not die and Creighton’s father there. Peter then goes to help them out and they get away to the boat. Washington goes his separate way from the others to once and for all declare independence from the British. Sophie is now working two jobs at the printing shop and somewhere else to receive more money. Everyone pitches in to print the next paper. Benjamin Franklin has escaped and left a letter saying he won’t show up for some time. This is how my alternate ending would be.
October 6, 2008 at 10:05 pm
In the story the ending, in my opinion, was good. If I could make an alternative ending I would make it interesting. In my ending, I would have Ben Franklin and Creighton’s Dad die at the same place, at the same time. I would have George Washington die from an attack of dodo birds. Sophie would move on and marry Creighton’s uncle and have his uncle join the American’s side. Also I would Creighton move on and stop all his bad habits of gambling, and get married and have three kids. One girl named Sophie, and two boys named Benjamin, and George. In my imagination that is how I would end the story.
October 6, 2008 at 11:39 pm
If I were to create an alternative ending this is what would happen. George Washington would be the one who is found in cell number four, instead of Henry Brown. Creighton would go and see his father’s grave. Ben Franklin would have survived the burring flames of the print, but he would have permanent 1st degree burns on his chest arms and legs. Also his leg had to be amputated. Creighton’s uncle is captured while escaping down river and hung in New Orleans. Lutenit Hale is captured, but Creighton convinces the Patriots to let him go. Hale becomes one of the Patriots. Creighton works at the printing shop with Sophie and also helps with the Patriot cause. Sophie works at the printing shop and helps maintain the house. Peter is still a messenger and helps deliver the paper. I would change the ending by Creighton playing a game of cards with George Washington
October 7, 2008 at 5:07 pm
In my story, the ending would be different. George Washington would be hung. Creighton would go back to England. His Uncle would still be dead. Sophie would live with Creighton in England and Dr. Franklin would actually come back to life. My story would be a little strange and different.
October 7, 2008 at 7:05 pm
The Year of the Hsngman, I thought, was a pretty good book. In the ending, he finds his father. My alternative ending to The Year of the Hangman book is that Creighton does not find his father but his uncle walks out on him and he never sees him again. He would tell all of the characters to just leave Creighton behnd to find his father himself. Also, Creighton Brown would reunite with his mother in my ending. This is my alternative ending for The Year of the Hangman.
October 8, 2008 at 6:14 pm
If I were writing YEAR OF THE HANGMAN, I would have changed a few things in the end. Before Creighton’s uncle would have died he would have given Creighton the code. Then Peter, General Arnold, and Creighton would have gone to get Washington. They would find Washington, but Creighton’s father would still be dead. In the end, Washington and Arnold will go off to battle, and Arnold will get killed. This is my alternate ending.
October 8, 2008 at 9:02 pm
If I were to write an alternate ending I would only change a few things. I would have General Washington be alive and be found along with Crieghton’s father. General Washington and General Arnold would attack Pensacola and win. When they won, the war would be over. Crieghton and his father would go back to England with Sophie and they would live together and be a happy family together.
October 8, 2008 at 11:15 pm
My alternate ending for The Year of the Hangman would be that Franklin actually was in a coma. Franklin was alive and they put a bell around his wrist (since they used to bury people alive back then, the put bells on them if they moved so that people would know they are alive.) so he is actually saved. His uncle would have died the same way except the cell number was to his dad and George Washington. So Creighton finds George Washington. Sophie ends up the same way in the end of the real book and Creighton stays and lives with Frankin and everyone at the end. That would be my alternate ending.
October 9, 2008 at 2:03 pm
In my ending George Washington does not die. The United States defeats the British like in real life. But George Washington doesn’t become president; he moves to Great Britain. Creighton and Sophie get married young and open up their own printing shop. Ben Franklin becomes the first president and serves for only one term before he dies. Colonel Gower is the one who is hung at the end.
October 9, 2008 at 4:27 pm
My alternate ending would be way differnet than the real book. So here goes…
I think that Creighton should’nt end up finding his dad. I think that he just shouldn’t have found him and he just go back to England on his own. Or actually, he would just saty in America. His uncle, would find a way to get back to England, and just live there in a happy life. Sophie would stay with Creighton in America. Sophie, Creighton, and Peter would all live in Dr. Franklin’s house and keep doing his newspaper every week. And Dr. Franklin would still be dead. I know, sad ending for Dr. Franklin…but that’s how i want it to be!!
This is my alternate ending.
October 9, 2008 at 8:45 pm
I would have changed the ending by instead of saying “not any longer”, I would have put in there, “if I were to play the game I will win it and not lose.” Meaning that if he ever had to play that horrible game that he would know exactly how to come out on top. Well Creighton gets to be with his dad in the end of the book. Sophie was still alive and happy to see Peter and Creighton. Oh and General Arnold, had one of his legs shot with a grapeshot, so they had to cut it off. Those would probably be the main characters of this book, so that’s what happened to them by the end of this book. If I were to change the ending, I would make it this. Ok so I would have kept Dr. Franklin alive, so that he could have helped Creighton kill General Arnold for never telling him about what really happened to his dad, and I would have made it so that he held Creighton’s father captive and never let him go, and was waiting for his nephew to figure out how to save him by using his brain. It would have been interesting if Creighton found out that his dad was held captive and tied General Arnold up and made him tell where he was, so that he could go and save him. Oh and if Creighton’s dad were to hang his brother, General Arnold. I think that’s how I would end the story I know its not much, but that’s just something I thought about saying.
October 9, 2008 at 10:12 pm
My alternative ending would go a little like this…
First off they Patriots would join with Spain, and America with France. Next America woulod win and Goerge Washington would have been shot in battle, wrather than hung. Ben Frankilin would still be alive and had moved to New York to expand other newspapers. Creighton and Sophie would get married, and Creightons father would got back to England after a month of Rehabilitation. Peter would stay with Creighton and Sophie. Creightons uncle would go to Spain and help the Spanish and English fight another war that they got into with Russians. Last in battle Creightons uncle would die in battle.
That is how my alternative ending would go.

I am replying to Mathew G’s response. Good thoughts I think it makes the book more dramatic when they die. It also makes it so that Sophie and Creighton can still see each other. But you forgot to say what happens to Creighton’s mom. But besides that, good ideas Mathew.

After several long, hard days Benjamin Franklin doesn’t seem to be getting any better after the fire incident. Creighton checks on him every now and then to see if he shows any signs that he could actually live. The doctor comes back after several days and reports that he seems to be getting better even though it is not noticeable. Days pass and Franklin is truly getting better on the outside and it is very noticeable. He can finally talk and sit up enough to eat. So Creighton, Peter, and Sophie help clean out the printing shop, which while take several weeks. Benedict Arnold comes by to see if they want to find out where George Washington is. So, after talking to Ben about, Creighton, Peter, and Arnold set out to find George Washington. Sophie stays behind to make sure Franklin gets better. On the way there, they stumble upon Gower lying near a tree, dying. As Creighton hurries over he hears him mutter “Saint Marks, 8565.” He tells Peter and Arnold and they figure it is a house where Washington is being held captive by the British. They get to the house finally. It is an old, abandoned house where they are almost sure Washington is. They silently enter the back door and there are signs of someone living there. Peter searches the backyard, Creighton searches upstairs, and Arnold searches the first floor. Peter searches ends quickly and nothing is found, so he goes upstairs to help Creighton. Arnold search takes longer but he finds nothing but old furniture and dust. The first floor looks almost untouched. Creighton’s search takes the longest even with the help of Peter. They search bedrooms and bathrooms but they find nothing. They finally get to the last room on the floor and they are tired and discouraged. Creighton and Peter check the whole room only to find some paper and footprints in the dust leading to a door. They open the door and there are two men on separate chairs bound and gagged! One of them is Washington and the other is unknown. They both are asleep or unconscious. Peter goes downstairs to find Arnold to tell him the news and Creighton unties the men and tries to wake them up. Arnold comes up with water from the sink downstairs. They pour some of the water on the men and they slowly woke up. After a few long minutes of rest, Arnold starts questioning the two men about their experiences in the house, who took them there, and who the third man was. They told him a few British soldiers took them there and they were planning to come back later and kill them. They had been given little to eat and drink and were mainly left there by themselves for hours on end. The other man said his name was Harry Brown, Creighton’s dad! It was a family reunion and a huge help to the country by finding George Washington. Finally they were all reunited and the news would soon be out about George Washington. Arnold and Washington return to their duties, Peter and Creighton go back to Dr. Franklin’s house, and Harry goes to find a ship back to England to reunite with his wife. Creighton and Sophie get married a year later.

Jacob I definitely agree with you when say that George Washington would be alive when you found him and that he would be found with Creighton’s father. I disagree though when you say that they would fight at Pensacola and win because if Washington just got out of jail I wouldn’t think that he would have enough energy to fight or even to make plans. I do agree with you though when you said that they would all go back to England also with Sophie.

In my alternate ending, many things happen. Creighton’s uncle doesn’t die in the dual, but he gets shot in the chest and is hospitalized back to health eventually. Also, instead of finding Creighton’s father in the jail cell, George Washington is found and the group escapes with him. Creighton, when back in America, Creighton finds his father’s gravestone that says, “Harry Brown, Savior of Lives, Respectable Man. Long May He Rest.” Creighton also decides to turn on the British and join the American colonists in their fight for freedom. Peter dies in a batlle, however, but dies a hero in the last battle of the war in which the colonist force finally defeats the British. Sohpie sets up the printing shop again also and Creighton helps her do that too. That is my alternate ending to the Year of the Hangman.

Bentley B, I both agree and disagree with your response. I do think Washington would be found in the cell and Creighton would reunite with Sophie and the printing shop. However, Liutenant Hale would rather die then join the Patriots. I bet Creighton’s uncle was captured and hung though because he was a bad chracter and had to go. But, Ben Franklin would probably have dies in the fire and, if not, died from his burns and amputated leg. This was my response to Betley Brown.

If I could be the alternate writer to the ending of the Year of the Hangman, it would be a happier ending than it was. Benjamin Franklin would have never died. Creighton would continue living and working at Benjamin Franklin’s print shop with him and Sophie. Peter would also work with Creighton because I think they are good friends. Colonel Gower would still have died, because I did not like him in the story, I thought he was very dark and mean in the book. The Revolutionary War would end soon and the Americans would win. I wish that George Washington was never hanged. It is sad to here him being hanged in the book, but not in real life. Well because what if he really was hung. Over all I think that this book was lots of fun to read. It had a lot of action.

The ending to this book would have to be happy. After Creighton finds his dad and finally is set to go with no worries, they meet this mysterious guy this guy is a British officer that is a trader he talks to Creighton’s dad about the whole story on George Washington. So now since there might be a chance to save George Washington, the brown family is on another dangerous task to save him and possibly save America. They find George on an island down south. He is all dirty and it looks like he got beaten really badly. He can barely talk but this comes out of his mouth “they tried to hang me but I killed them.” Creighton was shocked but thought of George being a brave leader. Finally Creighton and the others sail back to America where George starts a new life with a new name. His name is now Fred Turner. But since George is living unnoticed and everyone thinks he’s dead, the colonies are still under British rule. Creighton and his dad return safely to England. As Creighton grows up, he becomes one of America’s British rulers.

I agree with Maddie S. a good alternative ending to the year of the Hangman would be a happy one. It would be great if Benjamin Franklin was not killed and Creighton would still work the printing shop with him. Peter working by Creighton and Franklin’s side. I would keep Colonel Gower still died because he was an evil man and did not care for anyone. I agree with her when she said George Washington would not be hung. Finally, Harry Brown would live and stay well. That is why I agree with Maddie S.

If I could make an alternate ending I would definitely change the fate of many of the characters in the book. Instead of finding Creighton’s father, they fang George Washington and try to escape with him. Washington gets shot by Creighton’s father and dies. Creighton switched sides and shoots his father in the leg so that he can’t move. Peter is captured and taken hostage by British troops. Creighton’s uncle also turns sides and helps Creighton and Arnold to escape. Sophie finds a job at a bar and inherits it when the owner dies. Ben Franklin lives and continues printing and inventing.

Jack D I like your response for many reasons. One of them is that you used creativity that really impressed me. Another reason would be that you used a very good description of Harry Brown on his gravestone. I think that it is very just that you didn’t kill off Creighton’s uncle. You had a very good alternate ending Jack Dougherty.

If I were to create an alternate ending for the novel, The Year of the Hangman, many things would happen. Peter, Sophie and Creighton would re-open the Print Shop, which would be more high end, affordable and sucsessful. Dr. Franklin would be sadly crippled and have Peter and Creighton living with him doing his newspaper work. Creightons uncle would have not died, but have been shot in the ribs not killing him but leaving him hospitalized. Once the print shop would start moving along, and Creighton’s Uncle was well enough to move about, Sophie and Creightons uncle would move back to England and start a happier chapter of both their lives, away from the war. George Washington would be found, with the information that Creightons father died. The way his father would have died is being burnt bad in the fire. A cripled Franklin, would eventually be well enough to take the shop over himself with Peter leaving Creighton to go home to England to see his mom and show her how much he had matured. Once Creighton would get to England, his uncle would be a 30 minute walk from his house, and sophie would come live with him and his mother. This is my alternate ending of the novel our class has read.

Keegan M, i have read your responce and i am commenting on it. I agree with you that Creighton could go back to England to see his mother and show her how much he had changed since he last saw her. This is my responce to what you said about Creighton, his mom, and England.

In my alternative ending, I wouldn’t change too much of the story, but I would change enough of it. I agree with Jack Dougherty in reuniting Creighton and Sophie and the printing shop. I do believe that Creighton’s uncle was taken somewhere and either killed, shot, or hung because of all the bad deeds he had done. But I wouldn’t of had Ben Franklin die in the fire because he could have invented so many differant things now that may never have been invented!

If I were to add an alternate ending to this book I would have ben franklin still alive. I would have had creighton save him then get an award form general arnold. I still would have Creighton’s uncle dead because he deserved to die. I would also have Sophie and Creighton and Sophie work for Ben Franklin. Sophie and Creighton soon fall in love and get married and have children. By the time they are old and their kids ave kids the colonists rebel aginst Britian again and suceed this time. America gains its independence and Sophie and Creighton die in peace.

For my alternative ending this is how it would go. Creighton would find Washington in the jail cell instead of George Washngton. Then his uncle would get hanged. Ben Franklin would have survived the burns but would be left as a vegtable and not able to do anything. Creightons Uncle instead would be killed. Crieghton would then help Sophie work in the printing office. At the end It would show Creighton walk into the room and it would show George Washington and then they would play cards.
